C onnect
TCS system
m ounted CEC valve and at tem perature sw itch—position
harness in rocker arm cover clips.
21.
C onnect electrical leads at rear o f D elcotron.
22.
C onnect engine w iring harness at dash panel jun ctio n
block.
23. C onnect oil pressure gauge line if so equipped.
24.
Install radiator and fan guard, connect radiator and
heater hoses, install auto m atic transm ission cooler lines
and fill cooling system .
25.
C onnect b attery ground cable at engine block and at
b attery .
26.
C onnect pow er brake vacuum hose at inlet m anifold
fitting.
27.
Install engine cover.
28.
Bleed fro n t an d rear brakes as outlined in Section 5.
29.
S tart engine, check an d ad d engine coolant as required
an d check engine fo r proper operation.
M A N IF O L D ASSEMBLY
Removal
1.
Remove engine cover and position o u t o f way.
2.
D isconnect b attery ground cable at b attery .
3.
D isconnect engine wiring harness at rocker cover, at dash
panel and position so th a t it will n o t interfere w ith
m anifold removal.
4.
Remove air cleaner, air cleaner extension and flame
arrestor from rocker cover.
5.
D isconnect crankcase ventilation hose at rocker cover.

. D isconnect choke rod, fuel and vacuum lines at carbu­
r e t o r
a n d
remove
solenoid.
7.
D isconnect b o th th ro ttle rods at bellcrank.
8
. Raise vehicle on a h o ist and disconnect exhaust pipe at
m anifold flange— discard packing— and low er vehicle.
9.
Remove m anifold attaching bolts and clamps then
rem ove m anifold assem bly and discard gaskets.
10.
C heck for cracks in m anifold castings.
11.
S eparate m anifolds b y removing one b o lt and tw o n u ts at
cen ter o f assem bly. Transfer all necessary parts.
Installation
1.
Clean gasket surfaces on cylinder head and m anifolds.
2.
Lay a straight edge along th e full length o f the exhaust
p o rt faces and measure any gaps betw een th e straight
edge and the port faces. If at any p oin t a gap o f .030 or
m ore exists, it is likely the m anifold has distorted to a
p o in t where it will n o t seat properly. I f a good exhaust
seal is to be expected, th e exhaust m anifold m ust be
replaced.
3.
Reinstall th e one b o lt an d tw o nuts at the center o f the
m anifold to finger tight.
4.
P osition new gasket over m anifold end studs on the
cylinder head.
5.
Install m anifold assembly bolts and clamps while holding
m anifold assembly in place by hand.
6
. Clean, oil an d to rq u e all m anifold assem bly-to-cylinder
head bolts an d nuts to specifications.

7.
C om plete torquing th e inlet to exhaust m anifold b o lt
and tw o nuts at th e center o f the m anifold to specifica­
tions.

. C onnect exhaust pipe to m anifold using a new packing.
9.
C onnect crankcase ventilation hose at rocker arm cover.
10.
Install air cleaner extension and flame arrestor, th en
install air cleaner and h eat tu b e —connecting vacuum and
emission lines as required.
11.
C onnect engine wiring harness to dash panel and rocker
cover.
12.
Install engine cover and connect b attery ground cable.
13.
S tart engine, check for leaks and adjust carburetor idle
speed per decal instructions as required.

ROCKER ARM COVER

Removal
1.
D isconnect crankcase ventilation hose at rocker arm
cover.
2.
Remove air cleaner, air cleaner extension and flame
arrestor.
3.
Disconnect all wires from rocker arm cover clips.
4.
Remove rocker arm cover.
Installation
1. Clean gasket surfaces on cylinder head and rocker arm
cover w ith degreaser then, using a new gasket, install
rocker arm cover an d torque to specifications.
2.
C onnect wires at rocker arm cover clips.
3.
Install air cleaner extension, flam e arrestor and air
cleaner.
4.
C onnect crankcase ventilation hoses.
V A LV E MECHANISM
Removal
1.
Remove rocker arm cover as outlined.
2.
Remove rocker arm nuts, rocker arm balls, rocker arms
and push rods.
N O T E :
Place rocker arms, rocker arm balls and
push rods in a rack so they may be reinstalled in the
same location.
Installation and Adjustment
N O T E :
Wiienever new rocker arms and/or rocker
arm balls are being installed, coat bearing surfaces of
rocker arms and rocker arm balls w ith " M o ly k o te "
or its equivalent.
1.
Install push rods. Be sure push rods seat in lifter socket.
2.
Install rocker arms, rocker arm balls and rocker arm nuts.
Tighten rocker arm nuts until all lash is elim inated.
3.
A djust valves when lifter is o n base circle o f cam shaft
lobe as follows:
a.
Mark d istributor housing, w ith chalk, at num ber
one and num ber six cylinder positions (plug wire)
then disconnect plug wires at spark plugs and coil
