Install the shaft assembly in to the housing from the
u p p er end.
3.
Install th e lower shaft to the p o t jo in t coupling clamp.
I n s t a l l
th e
coupling
specifications.
N O T E :
The coupling bolt must pass through the
shaft undercut.
4.
Assemble the bearing housing as follows:
a.
Press the new upper and low er bearing races into
the bearing housing.
b .
Lubricate and install the bearings into the bearing
races.
c.
Place the lock shoe springs in position in the
housing. Install each shoe in place and com press the
spring until a suitable size straight punch can be
used to hold the shoe in position (it m ay be
necessary to acquire assistance to install th e shoes.
Once th e shoes are in place, drive in the shoe
retaining pin.
d.
Install the shoe release lever and drive in the pivot
pin.

Install the tilt release lever.
f.
L ubricate th e shoes and release lever.
5.
Install the bearing housing assembly to th e support. Hold
th e tilt release lever in th e " u p " position until the shoes
have fully engaged th e support. L ubricate and install th e
bearing housing pivot pins. Press th e pins in flush w ith
th e housing.

. Place the housing in th e full " u p " position and th en
install tilt spring and retainer (tapered end o f spring
clamp

first). Push in to the housing approxim ately 3 /1 6 " and
ro tate cou n ter clockwise

L ubricate and install th e upper bearing race, race seat and
to
locknut. Tighten the lo ck n u t (using Socket J-2 2 5 9 9 ) to
remove th e lash and th en carefully further tighten 1/16

to
o f a tu rn (colum n m ust be in straight ahead
position).

. Remove th e tilt release lever.
9.
Install th e directional signal switch.
10.
Column Shift Models — Install th e shift lever and pivot
pin.
11.
Install the steering wheel as outlined on Page 9 4 .
12.
C heck electrical and m echanical functioning o f colum n.
N O T E :
Torque values must be used as specified
during reassembly, see the Specification Section.
P rocedure below to be follow ed if the colum n is to be
rem oved from the vehicle.
Disassembly—Tilt Column (Fig. 14)
1. Place the colum n in a b ench vise using Holding F ixtures
J-22573 (fig. 15).
C A U T IO N : Clamping the column directly in a vise,
could result in a damaged column.
2.
Remove th e directional signal sw itch as outlined under
" D irectional Signal Switch-Rem oval" .
3.
Remove the lower steering shaft and p o t jo in t assembly
an d low er bearing and adapter assembly as outlined
u n d er " Low er Bearing and A dapter-R em oval" .
