Remove synchrom esh transm ission and clutch (if so
equipped).
a.
Remove clutch housing rear cover bolts.
b.
Remove bolts
attaching the clutch housing to
engine block, th e n rem ove transm ission clutch hous­
ing as a unit.
N O T E :
Support
the
mounting b o lt is removed and as it is being pulled
away fro m the engine, to prevent damage to clutch
disc.
c.
Remove starter and clutch housing rear cover.
d.
Loosen clutch m ounting bolts a tu rn at a tim e (to
prevent distortion o f clutch cover) u ntil the spring
pressure is released. Remove all bolts, clutch disc
and pressure plate assembly.

Remove auto m atic transm ission (if so equipped).
a.
Lower engine secured b y the hoist, and support
engine o n blocks.
b.
Remove starter and converter housing underpan.
c.
Remove flyw heel-to-converter attaching bolts.
d.
S upport transm ission on blocks.
e.
D isconnect th ro ttle linkage and vacuum m odulator
o n Powerglide. D isconnect d eten t cable on T urbo
Hydra-M atic.
f.
Remove transm ission-to-engine m ounting bolts.
g.
With th e hoist attached , remove blocks from the
engine only and slowly guide th e engine away from
th e transm ission.
Installation
1.
If engine was m ou n ted in an engine stand, a ttac h lifting
adapter to engine, th en , using lifting device, remove
engine from stand and perform the following:

Install the clutch assembly on flywheel as outlined
in Section 7.
b.
Install clutch housing rear cover and starter.
c.
Install th e transm ission and clu tch housing as o u t­
lined in Section 7.
d.
Install clutch housing rear cover bolts an d to rq ue to
specifications.
Install autom atic transm ission (if so equipped).
a.
Position engine adjacent to the transm ission and
align converter w ith th e flyw heel.
b.
Bolt transm ission to engine th e n raise engine and
transm ission
assembly
converter bolts.
c.
Install converter housing under pan and starter.
d.
C o n n e c t
th r o ttle
m odulator. C onnect d eten t cable on T urbo Hydra-
Matic.
2.
Raise engine and align m ounts on engine w ith brackets
on crossm em ber— install engine m ou n t th ro ug h bolts.
3.
Place w ood block betw een oil pan and crossm em ber to
stabilize pow er train.
4.
Rem ove floor jack from under crossm em ber and position
jack pad u n d er transm ission assem bly, using w ood block
at ja ck pad to p ro tect transm isssion.
5.
Remove th e engine lifting device and roll pow er train an d
suspension assembly under vehicle so th a t crossm em ber is
aligned w ith frame.

. Slow ly lower the vehicle, checking often to assure th a t
engine com ponents do n o t interfere w ith vehicle as it is
being low ered, until suspension-to-fram e attaching b olt
holes are aligned.
7.
Install and securely tighten suspension-to-fram e attaching
bolts.

. Install transm ission su p po rt crossm em ber and remove
floor jack from ben eath th e transm ission. Remove block
o f w ood from betw een oil pan and crossm em ber.
9.
Raise vehicle on th e hoist and install the rem aining
suspension-to-fram e
attaching
specifications. Torque transm ission to-crossm em ber and
crossm em ber to fram e bolts to specifications.
10. Install propeller shaft as o utlined in Section 4.
