Axle Vent

Replacement
The axle vent system consists o f the vent connector, vent
hose and associated attaching parts. When replacing vent hose
m ake sure th a t it is routed along original p ath in such a
m anner th at the hose is free from kinks or binds th a t w ould
restrict air flow . In replacing the vent connector; pry old
connector from carrier, being sure th a t entire con n ecto r is
removed. Tap new connecto r in to carrier w ith a soft-faced
ham m er, prick punch around edge o f hole to insure fit o f new
connector (fig. 4).

Axle Shaft

Removal
1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove wheel and tire assembly
and brake drum .
2. Clean all dirt and foreign m aterial from area o f carrier
cover.
3. Loosen carrier cover-to-carrier bolts slightly to allow
lubricant to drain from carrier. Remove carrier cover and
gasket.
4. Remove the differential pinion shaft lockscrew and the
differential pinion shaft (fig. 5).
5. Push flanged end o f axle shaft tow ard center o f vehicle
and remove "C" lock from b u tto n end o f shaft.

. Remove axle shaft from housing, being careful n o t to
damage oil seal at end o f housing.

Oil Seal and/or Bearing

Replacement
1. Remove the oil seal by using the b u tto n end of the axle
sh aft— insert the b u tto n end o f the shaft behind the steel
case o f the oil seal, then pry seal o u t o f bore being careful
n o t to damage housing. Refer to Figure
seal and bearing installation.
2.
Insert Tool J-8119 into bore and position it behind
bearing so that tangs on to o l engage bearing outer race.
Remove bearing, using slide ham m er as show n in Figure
7.
3. L ubricate new bearing w ith wheel bearing lubricant, and
install bearing so th a t it b o tto m s against shoulder in
housing bore (fig.
for the 2400 and 3100 lb. axles; T ool J-21051 for the
3500 lb. axles.
4. Pack cavity betw een the seal lips w ith a high-melting
p o in t wheel bearing lubricant. Position seal in axle
housing bore and tap seal in to position so th a t it b o tto m s
against bearing (fig.
for the 2400 and 3100 lb. axles; T ool J-21051 for the
3500 lb. axles.

Brake Flange Backing Plate

Replacement
1. Remove brake line at w heel cylinder inlet and disas­
semble brake com ponents from flange plate. Refer to
Section 5 for brake disassembly procedure.
2. Remove four nuts securing flange plate to axle housing
(fig.
3. Install new flange plate to axle housing and to rq u e nuts
to specifications.

number or w ith an equivalent part if replacement
becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement part
o f lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values
must be used as specified during reassembly to
assure proper retention of this part.

4. Install brake com ponents on flange and connect h y ­
draulic line to wheel cylinder inlet. Refer to Section 5 for
brake assembly procedure.
5. Bleed and adjust brakes as outlined in Section 5.
