The steering gear is o f the recirculating ball type. This gear
provides for ease o f handling by transm itting forces from the
w orm shaft to the pitm an shaft through the use o f ball
bearings.
The steering colum n is connected to the steering gear by a
flexible coupling. This coupling incorporates a capturing strap
w hich is designed to prevent colum n-to-coupling deflection
from exceeding the length o f th e coupling alignment pins.
The tilt steering colum n is new for Chevy Van b u t is basically
the same as the 1971 C & K series tru ck colum n. The one-piece
MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENTS
LUBRICATION
Steering Linkage
Every 6000 miles or four m onths, whichever occurs first,
the steering linkage should be lubricated w ith w ater resistant
EP chassis lubricant which meets General M otors Specification
GM 6 0 3 1M or its equivalent.
Steering Gear
The
steering
gear is factory-filled w ith steering gear
lubricant. Seasonal change o f this lubricant should not be
perform ed and the housing should n o t be d ra in e d -n o lubrica­
tion is required for the life of the steering gear.
Every 36,000 miles, the gear should be inspected for seal
leakage (actual solid grease— n o t just oily film ). If a seal is

whereas the steering linkage is located forw ard o f the fro n t
crossm em ber. Steering effo rt is transm itted to left and right
han d adjustable tie rod through a relay rod. The relay rod is
connected to an idler arm on th e right and to the pitm an arm on
the left.

refilled w ith No. 1051052 (13 oz. container) Steering Gear
L ubricant which m eets GM Specification GM 4673M , or its
equivalent.
N O TE:
Do not use EP Chassis Lube, which meets
GM Specification GM 6 0 3 1 M , to lubricate the gear.
DO N O T O V E R F IL L the gear housing.
ADJUSTMENTS
Steering Gear
Before any adjustm ents are made to the steering gear in an
attem p t to correct such conditions as shim m y, loose or hard
steering and road shocks, a careful check should be made o f
