4. Column Shift Models - Using a suitable size punch, drive
o u t the shift lever pivot pin and remove the shift lever.
5. Install the tilt release lever and place the colum n in the
full " u p " position. Remove the tilt lever spring and
retainer using a screw driver th a t ju st fits in to the slot
opening (fig. 16). Insert the screw driver in to the slot,
push in approxim ately 3 /1 6 " , rotate clockwise approxim -

ately tu rn un til th e retainer ears align w ith the
grooves in the housing and remove the retainer and
spring.

. Remove the steering shaft bearing locknu t using socket
J-22599. Remove th e upper bearing race seat and race.
7. Remove the tw o bearing housing pivot pins using Tool
J-21854 (fig. 7).

. Pull up on the tilt release lever (to disengage the lock
shoes) and remove the bearing housing. I f it is necessary
to disassemble the bearing housing, proceed as follows:
a. Press th e u p per and low er bearings o u t o f the
housing.
b. Using Puller J-5822 and Slide Hamm er J-2619 pull
the bearing races from the housing (fig. 18).

c. Remove the tilt release lever.
d. Drive o u t the shoe release lever pivot pin using Tool
J-22635 or a suitable punch (fig. 19). Rem ove the
lever spring and remove th e wedge.
e. Using a suitable size punch, drive out th e lock shoe
retaining pin. Remove th e shoes and shoe springs.
9. Rem ove the steering shaft assembly through th e upper
end o f the colum n. If it is necessary to disassemble the
shaft proceed as follows:
a. Turn the upper shaft 90° to the low er shaft and
slide th e u pper shaft and centering spheres from the
lower shaft.
b. R otate the centering spheres 90° and remove the
centering spheres and preload spring from the upper
shaft. •

Remove the four bearing housing support screws and
rem ove th e support.
Column Shift Models - If the shift tube index plate m ust
be rem oved, remove th e tw o retaining screws and remove
th e plate.
