neutralize any acid present and then flush o ff w ith clean
water. Keep vent plugs tight so th a t the neutralizing
solution does n o t enter the cell. T he hold dow n bolts
should be kept tight enough to prevent the b attery from
shaking around in its holder, b u t th ey should n ot be
tightened to th e point where the b attery case will be
placed under a severe strain.
To insure good co n tact, the b attery cables should
be tight on the b attery posts. Oil b attery term inal felt
washer. I f the b attery posts or cable term inals are
corroded, the cables should be cleaned separately w ith a
soda solution and wire brush. A fter cleaning and before
installing clam ps, apply a thin coating or p etro latu m to
th e posts and cable clamps to help retard corrosion.
I f the b attery has rem ained undercharged, check for
loose or defective fan b elt, defective D elcotron, high
resistance in the charging circuit, oxidized regulator
contact points, or a low voltage setting.

SERVICE DELCOTRON AND REGULATOR

The D elcotron and regulator tests during tune up consist of
the above b attery tests; the condition o f the b attery indicating
further tests and adjustm ents as outlined in Section
SERVICE BELTS (FIG . 8)
Inspect belt condition.
Check and adjust if necessary for correct tension o f b elt, as
follows:
SERVICE M A N IF O LD HEAT V A LV E (FIG . 9 or 10)
Check m anifold h eat control valve for freedom o f opera­
tion. If shaft is sticking, free it up w ith GM Manifold Heat
C ontrol Solvent or its equivalent.
TIG H TEN M A N IF O LD
Tighten intake m anifold bolts to specifications in the
sequence outlined on T orque Sequence C hart located at end of
Engine Mechanical section. A slight leak at th e intake m anifold
destroys engine perform ance and econom y.

SERVICE FUEL LINES AND FUEL FILTER

1. Inspect fuel lines for kinks, bends or leaks and correct

If the b attery has been using too m uch water, the
voltage o u tp u t is to o high.
Using a strand tension gauge, check the belt tension.
If belt is below the m inim um , adjust until the
specified tension is reached. (See Tune Up Chart in
Specification section.)
N O T E :
Tap shaft end to end to help free it up.

fabrication and replacem ent procedures for fuel lines.
Inspect filter and replace if plugged.
