The inboard shoe and lining has ears on the top ends which
fit over the caliper retaining bolts. A special spring inside the
hollow piston supports the b o tto m edge o f the inboard shoe.
N O T E :
Outboard
shoes
designed fo r original installation only and are fitted
to the caliper. The shoes should never be relined or
reconditioned fo r installation on Chevrolet vehicles.
Removal
1.
Remove m aster cylinder cover and observe brake fluid
level in fro n t reservoir. If reservoir is m ore than 1/3 full,
siphon the necessary am o un t o ut to bring the level to 1/3
full. (This step is taken to avoid reservoir overflow when
the caliper piston is pushed back into its bore.) Discard
the brake fluid rem oved. Never reuse brake fluid.
2.
Raise the vehicle and remove the fro n t wheels.
3.
Push the piston back in to its bore. This can be accom ­
plished by using a "C" clam p as show n in Figure 31.
4.
Rem ove the tw o m ounting bolts which attach the caliper
to the support as shown in Figure 32.

Lift the caliper o ff the disc.

. Remove the inboard shoe. Dislodge the outb o ard shoe
and position the caliper on the fro n t suspension arm so
th a t the brake hose will n o t support the weight o f the
caliper.
C A U T IO N :
M ark shoe positions if they are to be
reinstalled.
7.
Remove the shoe support spring from the piston.

. Remove the tw o sleeves from the inboard ears o f the
caliper.
9.
Remove the four rubber bushings from the grooves in
each o f the caliper ears.
Cleaning and Inspection
N O T E :
The shoes should be replaced when the
lining is worn to approxim ately 1 /3 2 " inch th ic k ­
ness over the rivet heads — Replace shoes in axle
sets.
