number or w ith an equivalent part if replacement
becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement part
of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values
must be used as specified during reassembly to
assure proper retention of this part.
Pump Belt Tension
1.
Loosen pivot b olt an d pum p brace adjusting nuts.
C A U T IO N : Do not move pump by prying against
reservoir or by pulling on fille r neck.
2. Move pum p, w ith b elt in place until belt is tensioned to
specifications as indicated b y Tool J-23600 (fig. 30).
3.
Tighten pum p brace adjusting n u t. T hen tighten pivot
b o lt nut.
F LU ID LEVEL
1. C heck oil level in the reservoir by checking the dip stick
w hen
oil is at operating tem perature. On models
equipped w ith rem ote reservoir, the oil level should be
m aintained approxim ately
wheels in full left tu rn position.
2.
Fill, if necessary, to p ro per level w ith GM Pow er Steering
F luid or equivalent. I f this is n o t available, autom atic
transm ission fluid bearing the m ark D exron® m ay be
used.
BLEEDING H Y D R A U LIC SYSTEM
1.
Fill oil reservoir to p ro per level and le t oil remain
u ndistu rbed for at least tw o m inutes.
2.
S tart engine and run only fo r ab o u t tw o seconds.
3.
A dd oil if necessary.
4.
R epeat above procedure un til oil level remains constant
after running engine.

Raise fro n t end o f vehicle so th at wheels are o ff the
ground.

. Increase engine speed to approxim ately 1500 rpm .
7.
Turn the wheels (o ff ground) right and left, lightly
contacting the w heel stops.
8
. Add oil if necessary.
9.
Lower the vehicle and turn wheels right and left on the
ground.
10.
Check oil level and refill as required.
11.
If oil is extrem ely foam y, allow vehicle to stand a few
m inutes w ith engine o ff and repeat above procedure.
a.
Check belt tightness and check for a b en t or loose
pulley. (Pulley should n o t w obble w ith engine
running.)
b.
Check to make sure hoses are n o t touching any
o th er parts o f th e truck, particularly sheet metal.
c.
Check oil level, filling to proper level if necessary,
following operations 1 through 10. This step and
Step " D" are extrem ely im p o rtan t as low oil level
an d /o r air in the oil are the m ost freq u en t causes o f
objectional pum p noise.
d.
Check the presence o f air in the oil. Air will show
up as a m ilky appearing oil. I f air is present, attem p t
to bleed system as described in operations
through 10. I f it becom es obvious th a t the pum p
will n o t bleed after a few trials, proceed as outlined
u nder H ydraulic System Checks.
H Y D R A U LIC SYSTEM CHECKS
The follow ing procedure outlines m ethods to id en tify and
isolate pow er steering hydraulic circuit difficulties. This test is
divided in to tw o parts. Test num ber one provides m eans of
determ ining w hether pow er steering system hydraulic parts are
actually faulty. I f test num ber one results in readings indi-
