Recommended Viscosity

Select the proper oil viscosity from the following chart:
RECOMMENDED SAE VISCOSITY NUMBER
10W , 5W -30, 10W -30, 10W -40
- 3 0
- 2 0
0
20
TEMPERATURE RANGE ANTICIPATED BEFORE NEXT OIL CHANGE, °F.
N O T E :
SAE 5W -20 oils are not recommended fo r
sustained high-speed driving.
SAE 3 0 oils may be used at temperatures above 4 0 °
F.
The proper oil viscosity helps assure good cold and h ot
starting.
The engine oil should be m aintained at
Checking Oil Level —
p roper level. T he best tim e to check it is before operating the
engine or as the last step in a fuel stop. T his will allow the oil
accum ulation in the engine to drain back in the crankcase. To
check the level, rem ove th e oil gauge ro d (dip stick), w ipe it
clean and reinsert it firm ly for an accurate reading. The oil
gauge rod is m arked " F U L L " and " ADD O IL" . If the oil is at
or below th e " ADD" m ark on th e dipstick, oil should be
added as necessary. The oil level should be m aintained in the
safety m argin, neither going above th e " F U L L " line nor below
" ADD O IL" line.
N O T E :
The oil gauge rod is also marked either,
"Use SE Engine O il" or, "Use G M 60 4 1 -M Q uality
MS O il", as a reminder to use only SE oils.

Supplemental Engine Oil Additives

T he regular use o f supplem ental additives is specifically n ot
recom m ended and will increase operating costs. However,
supplem ental additives are available th a t can effectively and
econom ically solve certain specific problem s w ith o u t causing
o ther difficulties. F o r exam ple, if higher detergency is required
to reduce varnish and sludge deposits resulting from some
unusual
operational
difficulty, a thoroughly tested
approved additive— " Engine Oil S upplem ent" — is available.
D R IV E BELTS
Drive belts should be checked every 6,000 miles or 4
m onths for proper tension. A loose belt will affect w ater pum p
and generator operation.
POSITIVE CRANKCASE V E N T IL A T IO N V A LV E
Every 24,000 miles or 24 m onths the valve should be
replaced. Connecting hoses, fittings and flam e arrestor should
be cleaned. A t every oil change the system should be tested for
proper function and serviced, if necessary.

AIR INJECTION REACTOR SYSTEM (A.I.R.)
CONTROLLED COMBUSTION SYSTEM (C.C.S.)
T he Air Injection R eactor system should have the drive belt
inspected fo r wear and tension every 12 m o n th s or 12,000
miles, whichever occurs first. In addition, com plete effective
ness o f either system , as well as full pow er and perform ance,
depends upon idle speed, ignition tim ing, and idle fuel m ixture
being set according to specification. A quality tune-up which
includes these adjustm ents should be perform ed periodically
to
assure norm al engine efficiency, operation and per
form ance.

GIVI EVAPORATION CONTROL SYSTEM
Every 24 m onths or 24,000 miles (m ore o ften under dusty
conditions) th e filter in th e base o f th e canister m ust be
replaced and th e canister inspected.
M A N IFO LD HEAT CONTROL V A LV E
Every 6,000 miles or 4 m onths, check valve for freedom of
operation. I f valve shaft is sticking, free it up w ith GM
M anifold H eat C ontrol Solvent or its equivalent.

AIR CLEANER

N O T E :
Under prolonged dusty driving conditions,
i t
is
recommended
performed more often.
Oil Wetted Paper Element Type—
L-6 engine, replace every 12,000 m iles; V-8 engine, every
12.000 miles, inspect elem ent for dust leaks, holes or other
damage. Replace if necessary. I f satisfactory, ro tate elem ent
180° from originally installed position. Replace at 24,000
miles. Elem ent m ust n o t be w ashed, oiled, tapped or cleaned
w ith an air hose.
Crankcase Ventilation Filter (Located Within
Air Cleaner)
I f so equipped, inspect at every oil change an d replace if
necessary. Replace at least every 2 4,000 miles; m ore often
under dusty driving conditions.

FUEL FILTER

Replace filter elem ent located in carb u reto r inlet every 12
and
m onths or 12,000 miles whichever occurs first, or, if an in-line
filter is also used, every 2 4,000 miles.
Replace in-line filter every 24,000 miles.

DISTRIBUTOR

Remove d istrib u to r cap and ro tate lu b ricato r 1/2 tu rn at
12.000 mile intervals. Replace at 24,000 mile intervals.

GOVERNOR

The attaching bolts should be k ep t tight, the optionally
available governor should be k ep t clean externally and the
filter elem ent should be replaced every 12,000 miles.
