ALL CARBURETORS
REM O VAL (Figs. K1, K2 and K3)
Flooding, stum ble on acceleration and o th e r perform ance
com plaints are, in many instances, caused by the presence of
dirt, w ater, gum and varnish caused by stale fuel from
prolonged vehicle storage, or oth er foreign m atter in the
carburetor. To aid in diagnosing the cause o f the com plaint,
the carbu reto r should be carefully removed from the engine
w ith o u t draining the fuel from the bowl. T he co ntents o f the
fuel bowl may then be exam ined for contam inatio n as the
carb u retor is disassembled. Check filter.

Remove air cleaner and gasket.
2.
D isconnect fuel and vacuum lines from carburetor.
3.
D isconnect choke coil rod.
4.
D isconnect accelerator linkage.
5.
If equipped w ith autom atic transm ission, disconnect TV
linkage.

. Remove C.E.C. valve (if so equipped) vacuum hose and
electrical connector.
7.
Remove idle stop electrical w iring from solenoid (if so
equipped).
8
. Remove carb uretor attaching n ut an d/o r bolts, gasket or
insulator and remove carburetor.
TEST BEFORE IN S TA LLA TIO N
It is good shop practice to fill the carb ureto r bow l before
installing the carburetor. This reduces th e strain on the starting

m o to r and b attery and reduces the possibility o f backfiring
while attem p tin g to start the engine. A fuel pum p clam ped to
the bench, a small supply o f fuel and the necessary fittings
enable the carburetor to be filled and the operation o f the
float and intake needle and seat to be checked. O perate the
th ro ttle lever several tim es and check the discharge from the
pum p jets before installing the carburetor.
