COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIRS

REAR DRUM BRAKES
N O T E :
If brake drums are worn severely, it may
be necessary to retract the adjusting screw. To gain
access to the adjusting screw star wheel, knock out
the lanced area in the web of the brake drum or
backing plate using a chisel or similar tool. Release
the
actuator from
the star wheel w ith a small
screwdriver on models w ith access hole in backing
plate or w ith a wire hook on models with hole in
drum .
Back o ff
the
screwdriver to retract shoes (Figs. 21 and 22 ).
C A U T IO N :
A fte r knocking out the metal, be sure
to remove it from the inside o f the drum and clean
all metal from the brake com partm ent. A new metal
hole
cover
must
be
reinstalled.
N O T E :
Riveted linings should be replaced when
worn w ithin 1 /3 2 " of rivet heads.
