1. Rem ove the ro to r.

Rem ove b o th w eight springs and advance weights.
3.
Remove roll pin retaining driven gear to the d istributor
shaft, slide th e gear and spacers from th e shaft.
4.
Before sliding the distributor shaft from th e housing,
check for and remove any burrs on th e shaft. This will
prevent damage to the seals and bushing still positioned
in th e housing.
5.
Slide the distributor m ainshaft and cam-weight base
assembly from th e housing.
6
. Remove vacuum advance m echanism retaining screws,
remove th e vacuum advance assembly.

Remove th e spring retainer, remove th e breaker plate
assembly from the d istrib u to r housing. Remove the
contact p o in t and condenser from th e breaker plate.
Remove th e felt washer and plastic seal located beneath
th e breaker plate.
Cleaning and Inspection
1. Wash all parts in cleaning except cap, ro to r, condenser,
breaker plate assembly and vacuum co n tro l unit. Degreas­
ing com pounds may damage insulation o f these parts or
saturate th e lubricating felt in the case o f the breaker
plate assembly.
2.
Inspect th e breaker plate assembly for damage or wear
and replace if necessary.
3.
Inspect th e shaft for wear and check its fit in the
bushings in the d istrib u to r b ody. If th e shaft or bushings
are w orn, th e parts should be replaced.
4.
M ount th e shaft in "V " blocks and check the shaft
alignm ent w ith a dial gauge. The run-out should not

exceed .

5.
Inspect the advance weights for wear or burrs and free fit
on their pivot pins.

. Inspect the cam for wear or roughness. Then check its fit
on the end o f the shaft. It should be absolutely free
w ith o u t any roughness.
7.
Inspect th e co n d itio n o f the distributor points. D irty
points should be cleaned and badly p itted points should
be replaced. (See D istributor C ontact Points.)
8
. Test the condenser for series resistance, m icrofarad
capacity (.18 to .23) and leakage or breakdow n, follow ­
ing the instructions given by th e m anufacturer o f th e test
equipm ent used.
9.
Inspect the d istrib u to r cap and spark plug wires for
damage an d replace if necessary.
Assembly
Six Cylinder Engine
Refer to Figure 7i, for E xploded View o f D istributor.
1.
Replace cam assem bly to m ainshaft.
N O T E :
Lubricate top end o f shaft w ith Delco cam
and
ball
bearing grease or equivalent prior to
replacing.
2.
Install governor weights on their pivot pins, replace
weight springs. Install weight cover and stop plate.
3.
L ubricate m ainshaft and install it in d istributor housing.
4.
Install d istrib u to r driven gear to m ainshaft and insert
retaining roll pin. Check to see th a t shaft turns freely.
5.
Install breaker plate assembly in the d istrib u to r b o d y and
attach retaining screws.
6
. A ttach condenser and contact p o in t set in proper loca­
tio n w ith appropriate attaching screws.
N O T E :
Contact
point
matching hole in breaker plate. Connect primary
and condenser leads to contact set quick-disconnect
term inal.
