. Install the fro n t cable to the cross sill spring.
9. Low er the vehicle to the floor.

CENTER CABLE

Removal
1.
Raise vehicle on a hoist.
2.
Rem ove fro n t cable con nection at equalizer.
3.
Remove center from cable guides and connectors and
remove cable.
Installation
Install in reverse order o f removal and lower vehicle to the
floor.

REAR CABLE

Removal
1. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
2.
Back o ff the equalizer jam n u t and adjusting n u t until
sufficient clearance is obtained to separate the center
cable from th e rear cable (either left or right side).
The Power Brake U nit is a self-contained hydraulic and
vacuum u nit, utilizing m anifold vacuum and atm ospheric
pressure for its pow er.
This u nit perm its the use o f a low brake pedal as well as less

1. C heck vacuum line an d vacuum line connections as well
as vacuum check valve in fro n t shell o f pow er unit for
possible vacuum loss.
2.
Inspect all hydraulic lines and connections at the wheel
cylinders an d m aster cylinder for possible hydraulic
leaks.
3. C heck brake assemblies for scored drum s, grease or brake
fluid on linings, w orn or glazed linings, and m ake
necessary adjustm ents.
4.
C heck brake fluid level in th e hydraulic reservoirs. The
reservoirs should be filled to th e levels shown in Figure
5.
C heck for loose m ounting bolts at m aster cylinder and at
pow er section.

. C heck air cleaner filter in pow er piston extension and
replace filter if necessary.

Remove the rear cable retainer at cross sill.
4.
Pull the cable, left or right, o u t o f hole in cross sill.
5.
With brake shoes exposed remove secondary shoe re­
tainers until sufficient clearance can be obtained to
remove the knobbed end o f the rear cable from the
parking brake lever.

. Compress locking fingers (rem ove clam p on 30 series)
and w ithdraw the cable from the backing plate.
Installation
1. Push cable through the backing plate and hook the
kn obb ed end to the parking brake lever.
2.
Be sure the locking fingers are " seated" or the clam p is in
proper position to the backing plate.
3.
R oute the cable through the cross sill and install the
retainer.

4.
Install the center cable to rear cable co nnector. Be sure
cable guides are in place.

A djust the parking brake and lower the vehicle to the
floor.

pedal and push rod.
Lubrication
The pow er brake u nit is lubricated at assembly an d needs
no further lubrication o th e r than m aintaining norm al reservoir
fluid level. The reservoir should be filled as described in this
section.

Bleeding Inspections

The pow er system may be bled m anually or w ith a pressure
bleeder as o utlin ed in this section. Use only GM Suprem e 11

Brake Fluid or equivalent. D o n o t use the pow er assist while
bleeding. The engine should not be running and the vacuum
reserve should be reduced to zero by applying th e brake
several tim es before starting the bleeding procedure.
