ENGINE 6-12
The following valves can be adjusted w ith engine in
num ber six firing position:

Engine — N um ber tw o cylinder-Exhaust
N um ber three cylinder-Intake
N um ber four cylinder-Exhaust
N um ber five cyliner-Intake
N um ber six cylinder-Intake and
Exhaust.

a.
C rank engine u n til m ark on torsional dam per lines
up w ith center or "
the engine is in the num ber 1 firing position. This
may be determ ined by placing fingers on the

num ber
cylinder valve as the m ark on the dam per
com es near the " 0 " m ark on the fro n t cover. I f the
valves are not moving, the engine is in the num ber
firing position. I f th e valves move as the m ark
com es up to the tim ing tab, the engine is in num ber
6
firing position and crankshaft should be ro tated
one m ore revolution
position.

Valve adjustm ent is m ade by backing o ff the adjust­
ing n u t (rocker arm stu d n u t) until there is play in
the push rod and then tighten n ut to ju st remove all
push rod to rocker arm clearance. This may be

determ ined by ro tatin g push rod w ith fingers as the
n ut is tightened (Fig. 23). When push rod does n ot
readily move in relation to the rocker arm , the
clearance has been elim inated. The adjusting n u t
should th en be tightened an additional
place th e hydraulic lifter plunger in the center o f its
travel. No oth er adjustm ent is required.

With the engine in the num ber 1 firing position as
determ ined above, the following valves m ay be
adjusted.
Exhaust - 1, 3, 4 ,
Intake — 1, 2, 5, 7

Crank the engine one revolution until the pointer

Clean gasket surfaces on cylinder head(s) and rocker arm

cover(s) w ith degreaser, th en install rocker arm cover(s),
using new gasket(s), an d to rq u e bolts to specifications.
5.
Install d istributor cap and spark plug wire assembly.

. Install rocker arm cover as outlined.
7.
A djust carburetor idle speed.
