5. Install fan belt and adjust to specifications using strand
tension gauge.

. Fill cooling system , start engine and check for leaks.
Crankcase Front Cover
Removal
1. Remove oil pan as outlined.
2. Rem ove torsional dam per as outlined.
3. Remove w ater pum p as outlined in Section
4. Remove crankcase fro n t cover attaching screws and
remove fro n t cover and gasket, th en discard gasket.
Installation
1. Make certain th a t cover m ounting face an d cylinder
block fro n t end face are clean and flat.
2. C oat th e oil seal w ith engine oil and using a new cover
gasket, coated w ith gasket sealer install cover and gasket
over dowel pins and cylinder block.
3. Install cover screws and to rq u e to specifications.
4. Install w ater pum p as outlined in Section
5. Install torsional dam per as outlined.
6
. Install oil pan as outlined.
Oil Seal (Front Cover)
Replacement
With Cover Removed
1. With cover rem oved, pry old seal o u t o f cover from the
fro n t w ith a large screwdriver.
2. Install new seal so th a t open en d o f th e seal is tow ard th e
inside o f cover and drive it in to position w ith Tool
J-23042 (Fig. 17V).
C A U T IO N : Support cover at seal area. (Tool J-971
may be used as support.)

Without Cover Removed
1. W ith torsional dam per rem oved, pry seal o u t o f cover
from th e fro n t w ith a large screwdriver, being careful n ot
to damage th e surface on the crankshaft.
2. Install new seal so th a t open end o f seal is tow ard the
inside o f cover and drive it into position w ith Tool
J-23042 (Fig. 18V).
