N O T E :
A ll axle attachments are im portant attach
ing parts in that they could affect the performance
o f vital components and systems, and/or could
result in major repair expense. They must be re
placed w ith parts o f the same part numbers or w ith
equivalent parts if replacement becomes necessary.
Do not use replacement parts o f lesser quality or
substitute design. Torque values must be used as
specified during reassembly to assure proper reten
tion of these parts.
Removal
1. Raise vehicle on hoist, and remove rear wheels.
2. Remove tw o trunnion bearings " U " bolts from the rear
yo k e; split rear universal jo in t; position propeller shaft to
one side, and tie it to the frame side rail.
N O T E :
The bearings can be left on the trunnion
and held in place w ith tape.
3. Remove brake drum and disconnect parking brake cable
at lever and at flange plate. (See Section 5 for cable
removal.)
4. D isconnect hydraulic brake hose at connector on rear
axle housing. ( If vehicle is equipped w ith air brakes,
disconnect air line at brake cham bers, and tie lines o u t o f
the way.)
5. D isconnect shock absorbers at axle brackets.
6
. S upport axle assembly w ith hydraulic jack, remove spring
" U " bolts, and low er axle assembly to the floor.
Installation
1. Place axle assembly under vehicle, raise into position,
install spring " U " bolts, anchor plates and nuts, and
tighten securely.
2. Connect and secure shock absorbers to axle brackets.
3. Connect hydraulic brake hose to connector on axle
housing, and bleed hydraulic system as specified in
Section 5.

4. C onnect hand brake cables and adjust parking brakes as
specified in Section 5.
5. Reassemble the rear universal jo in t, m aking sure th a t " U "
bolts are drawn up tight and locked properly. T orque to
specifications.
6
. Install rear wheels, remove stand jacks, and lower vehicle.
7. T est operation o f brakes and rear axle.
Axle Vent
Replacement
Service replacem ent axle housing assemblies are n o t equip
ped w ith an axle vent; therefore, always m ake sure th a t a new
vent assembly is installed when replacing the housing. If axle
vent requires replacem ent, pry old vent form housing being
sure th a t entire vent is removed. Prick punch around carrier
hole to insure fit o f replacem ent vent. Tap new vent into
housing using a soft-faced ham m er. V ent should be positioned
in housing so th a t flat surface is tow ard centerline o f differ
ential carrier (fig. 18).
Axle Shaft
Removal and Installation
1. Remove bolts and lock washers that attac h the axle shaft
flange to the wheel hub.
2. Install tw o 1/2"-13 bolts in the threaded holes provided
in the axle shaft flange. By turning these bolts alternately
the axle shaft m ay be easily started and then removed
from the housing (fig. 19).
3. T horoughly clean b o th the axle shaft flange and the end
o f the wheel hub.
N O T E :
A n y lubricant on these surfaces tends to
loosen axle shaft flange bolts.
4. Place a new gasket over the axle shaft and position the
axle shaft in the housing so th at the shaft splines enter
the differential side gear. Position gasket so th at holes are
in alignm ent and install flange-to-hub attaching b olts—
torque bolts to specifications.
N O T E :
To prevent lubricant from leaking through
flange holes, apply a non-hardening sealer (such as
Permatex Type A or equivalent) to bolt threads. Use
care in the am ount of sealer applied, as in too heavy
an application, the sealer may be forced out as the
bolt is installed and may destroy sealing effect of
the flange-to-hub gasket.
