2. Disconnect propeller shaft and remove pinion flange and
deflector.
3. Remove bolts retaining the oil seal retainer to carrier, and
w ithdraw retainer from pinion.
4. Pry old seal from bore, using care so as n ot to damage
m achined surface o f retainer.
5. Thoroughly clean all foreign m atter from seal contact
area in retainer.
6
. Pack the cavity betw een the seal lips w ith a high-melting
point bearing lubricant, position seal on installer Tool
1-22281
so that seal shoulders against installer drive
surface.
7. Press seal into retainer until it b otto m s against shoulder.
8
. Carefully position seal retainer over pinion to prevent
damage to seal, and torque retaining bolts to specifica­
tions.
9. Reinstall pinion flange and propeller shaft as m arked in

Both one piece and tw o piece propeller shafts are used
depending on the model. All are tubular and use needle
bearing type universal joints.
On m odels th at use a two piece shaft, the shaft is supported
near its splined end in a rubber cushioned ball bearing which is
m ounted in a bracket attached to a frame crossm ember. The
ball bearing is perm anently lubricated and sealed.

Removal
1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove U-bolts at axle connection.

part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque
values must be used as specified during reassembly
to assure proper retention o f this part.

No-Spin Differential Unit

The optionally available No-Spin differential service pro­
cedures are the same as for conventional axles.
O n-the-Vehicle Check
1. Raise rear o f vehicle u n til b o th rear wheels are o ff the
floor.
2. Shift transm ission into gear.
3. R otate b o th rear wheels as far forw ard as possible.
4. With assistant holding left wheel forw ard, rotate the right
w heel to the rear, checking for free rotation.
5. R otate b o th wheels as far to the rear as possible.
6
. While holding the left wheel rearw ard, ro tate the right
wheel forw ard, again checking for free ro tation.
7. R epeat Steps 3-6, holding the right wheel and rotating
the left wheel for left side forw ard and rearw ard opera­
tio n check.
8
. If wheels cannot be ro tated freely as described above,
remove and inspect the No-Spin.

3. F or m odels w ith two-piece shafts remove bolts retaining
bearing support to frame crossm ember.
4. Slide propeller shaft forw ard disengaging trunnion from
axle flange, then slide assembly rearward disengaging
from transmission.
inspection
Wash ends o f propeller shaft in cleaning solvent, inspect for
damage and excessive wear on splines, trunnions and bearings.
Disassembly
1. Remove trunnion bearings from propeller shaft yoke as
follows:

Remove lock rings from yoke and lubrication fitting
from trunnion.
