( 3 ) CAUTIO N: In addition to its fu n ction o f filtering air drawn in to the engine through the carburetor, the air
cleaner also acts as a flam e arrestor in the event the engine backfires. Because backfiring m ay cause fire in the
engine com partm ent, the air cleaner should be installed at all tim es unless its rem oval is necessary for repair or
m aintenance services.
Paper E lem ent Type — First 1 2,0 0 0 m iles, in sp ect elem ent for dust leaks, holes, or other damage and replace if
necessary. If satisfactory, rotate elem en t 1 8 0
m iles. E lem en t m ust n o t be w ashed, oiled , tapped, or cleaned w ith an air hose. If so equipped, replace P.C.V.
breather filter every 2 4 ,0 0 0 m iles (do n ot attem p t to clean). I f so equipped, clean wire mesh frame arrestor every
1 2 ,0 0 0 miles.
Oil Bath T ype — The oil level in the o il bath air cleaner reservoir should be checked every 1 2 ,0 0 0 m iles and
sufficient S.A .E. 5 0 oil added w hen tem perature is above freezing or S.A .E . 20 oil added w hen tem perature is
b elow freezing. A dding oil and servicing the cleaner will vary greatly, depending upon operating conditions.
