STEERING 9-20
Fig. 3 2 —Power Steering Gear M ounting-Typical
5.
Remove the steering gear to fram e bolts and remove the
gear assembly.
6
. Remove the flexible coupling pinch b olt and remove the
coupling from the steering gear stub shaft.
Installation
C A U T IO N : A ll steering gear to fram e, pitm an arm
to pitm an shaft and steering coupling fasteners are
im portant attaching parts in th at they could affect
the performance of vital components and systems,
and/or could result in major repair expense. They
must be replaced w ith one of the same part number
or w ith an equivalent part if replacement becomes
necessary. Do not use a replacement part o f lesser
quality or substitute design. Torque values must be
used as specified during reassembly to assure proper
retention of this part.
1.
a.
Install the flexible coupling o nto the steering gear
stub shaft, aligning the flat in the coupling w ith the
flat on the shaft. Push the coupling onto th e shaft
until the stub shaft b o tto m s on the coupling rein
forcem ent. Install the pinch b o lt and torque to
specifications.
N O T E : The coupling bolt must pass through the
shaft undercut.
b.
Place the steering gear in position, guiding th e
coupling bo lt in to th e steering shaft flange.
c.
Install the steering gear to fram e bolts and to rqu e to
specifications.
d.
I f flexible coupling alignm ent pin plastic spacers
were used, m ake sure th ey are b o tto m ed on the
pins, tighten the flange b o lt nuts to specifications
and th en remove the plastic spacers (fig. 9).
e.
I f flexible coupling alignm ent pin plastic spacers
were n o t used, center th e pins in the slots in the
steering shaft flange and then install and torque th e
flange b o lt nuts to specifications.
2.
Install the pitm an arm o n to the pitm an shaft, lining up
the m arks made at removal. Install the pitm an shaft n u t
o r pitm an arm pinch b o lt and torque to specifications.
3.
Remove the plugs and caps from the steering gear and
hoses and connect the hoses to the gear. Tighten the hose
fittings to specified torque.
POWER STEERING PUMP
Removal (Fig. 33)
1.
D isconnect hoses at pu m p. When hoses are disconnected,
secure ends in raised position to prevent drainage o f oil.
Cap or tape the ends o f the hoses to prevent entrance o f
dirt.
D isconnect reservoir hose at p um p and secure in raised
position. Cap hose pum p fittings.
2.
Install tw o caps at pum p fittings to prevent drainage o f
oil from pum p.
3.
Loosen bracket-to-pum p m ounting nuts.
4.
Remove pum p belt.
5.
Remove bracket-to-pum p bolts and remove pum p from
vehicle.
6
. Remove drive pulley attaching n u t.
7.
Remove pulley from shaft. D o n o t ham m er pulley off
shaft as this will damage pum p. Use Tool J-21239-1 for
pulling stam ped pulleys or Tool J-8433-1 w ith A dapter
J-8433-2 for cast pulleys.
Installation
1.
Install pum p pulley.
C A U T IO N : Do not hammer on pump shaft. Use
pulley nut to pull pulley onto shaft.
2.
Position pum p assembly on vehicle and install attaching
parts loosely.
3.
C onnect and tighten hose fittings.
4.
Fill reservoir. Bleed pum p by turning pulley backw ard
(counter-clockw ise as viewed from fro n t) until air b u b
bles cease to appear.
5.
Install pum p b elt over pulley.
6
. Tension belt as outlined under "Pum p Belt T ension—
A djustm ent" in this section.
7.
Bleed as o utlined under " M aintenance and A djustm ents."
POWER STEERING HOSES
When servicing pow er steering hoses, avoid tw isting the
hose unnecessarily. Install hoses w ith th e wheels in the straight
ahead position, th en turn th e wheels to the right and left,
while observing m ovem ent o f the hoses.
N ote and correct any hose co n tact w ith other parts o f the
vehicle th a t could cause chafing or wear.
Any m aintenance operation, on the pow er steering equip
m ent, should include a thorough inspection o f th e hydraulic
line system.
Figure 34 illustrates typical installations.
