33. Rem ove synchrom esh transm ission and clutch (if so
equipped).
a. Remove clu tch housing rear cover bolts.
b. Remove bolts attaching the clutch housing to
engine block, th e n remove transm ission and clutch
housing as a unit.
N O T E : Support the
mounting bolt is removed and as it is being pulled
away from the engine, to prevent damage to clutch
disc.
c. Remove sta rter and clutch housing rear cover.
d. Loosen clutch m ounting bolts a tu rn at a tim e (to
prevent distortion o f clutch cover) until th e spring
pressure is released. Rem ove all bolts, clutch disc
and pressure plate assembly.
34. Remove auto m atic transm ission (if so equipped).
a. Lower engine, secured b y the hoist, and support
engine on blocks.
b. Remove sta rter and converter housing underpan.
c. Remove flyw heel-to-converter attaching bolts.
d. S upport transm ission on blocks.
e. D isconnect th ro ttle linkage and vacuum m o d u lato r
on Powerglide. D isconnect detent cable on T urbo
Hydra-M atic.
f. Remove transm ission-to-engine m ounting bolts.
g. With the hoist attach ed , remove blocks from the
engine only and slowly guide th e engine away from
the transm ission.
35. M ount engine in engine stand an d remove lifting device
and lifting adapter.
Installation
1. I f engine was m ounted in an engine stand, attach lifting
adapter-to-engine, then
engine from stand and perform th e following:
• Install synchrom esh transm ission and clutch (if so
equipped).
a. Install th e clutch assem bly on flywheel as outlined
in Section 7.

b. Install clutch housing rear cover and starter.
c. Install the transm ission and clutch housing as o u t­
lined in Section 7.
d. Install clutch housing bolts and to rq u e to specifica­
tions.
• Install autom atic transm ission (if so equipped).
a. Position engine adjacent to the transm ission and
align th e converter w ith th e flyw heel.
b. Bolt transm ission to engine and th en raise engine
and transm ission assembly and install flyw heel to
converter bolts.
c. Install converter housing underpan and starter.
d. Connect th ro ttle linkage and vacuum m odulator.
Connect d eten t cable on T urbo Hydra-M atic.
2. Raise engine and align m ounts on engine w ith brackets
on crossm em ber— install engine m ount through bolts.
3. Place w ood block betw een oil pan and crossm em ber to
stabilize pow er train.
4. Rem ove floor ja ck from under crossm em ber and position
jack pad under transm ission assem bly, using w ood blocks
at jack pad to p ro tect transm ission.
5. Remove th e lifting device from engine brackets.

. Roll the pow er train and suspension assem bly under
vehicle so th a t crossm em ber is aligned w ith fram e.
7. Slowly low er th e vehicle, checking o ften to assure th a t
engine com ponents do n o t interfere w ith vehicle as it is
being low ered, u n til suspension to fram e attaching b o lt
holes are aligned.
8
. Install and securely tighten suspension to-fram e attaching
bolts.
9. Install transm ission sup p o rt crossm em ber, and remove
floor jack from b en eath the transm ission.
10. Raise vehicle on the hoist and install the rem aining
suspension-to-fram e attaching
specifications. T orque transm ission-to-crossm em ber and
crossm em ber to fram e bolts to specifications.
11. Install propeller shaft as outlined in Section 4.
12. C onnect rear brake pipe at right fram e rail connector;
connect fro n t brake pipe at equalizer tee an d connect
rear brake pipe at left fram e rail connector.
13. Install and to rq u e shock absorber attaching bolts to
specifications. C onnect stabilizer shaft to fram e.
14. Install cross shaft and connect clu tch linkage an d/or
transm ission linkage as o u tlin ed in Section 7.
15. C onnect th e follow ing item s:
• Fuel line (fro m ta n k ) at fuel pum p.
• Engine ground strap(s).
• Steering idler arm at fram e; th e n steering pitm an
arm at steering gear and to rq u e n u t to specifica­
tions.
• B attery positive cable at starter.
• Speedom eter cable at transm ission.
• TCS sw itch a t tran sm issio n -in stall TCS wire to clip
at transm ission/clutch housing
• Install exhaust system .
16. Remove w ood block placed betw een crossm em ber and
oil pan.
17. Low er vehicle on hoist.
18. C onnect accelerator linkage at dash panel m ounted bell
crank.
19. C onnect Evaporation C ontrol System lines at rocker arm
cover and at carburetor.
