Correcting Irregular Tire Wear
Heel and Toe Wear— This is a saw -toothed effect where one
end o f each tread block is w orn m ore than the other.
The end th a t wears is th e one th a t first grips the road w hen
the brakes are applied.
Heel and toe wear is less noticeable on rear tires than on
fro n t tires, because the propelling action o f the rear wheels
creates a force w hich tends to wear the opposite end o f the
tread blocks. The tw o forces, propelling and braking, make for
m ore even wear o f the rear tires, whereas only the braking
forces act on the fro n t wheels and th e saw -tooth effect is m ore
noticeable.
A certain am o u n t o f heel and toe wear is norm al. Excessive
wear is usually due to high speed driving and excessive use of
brakes. The best rem edy, in ad d itio n to cautioning th e owner
on his driving habits, is to inter-change tires regularly.
