hydraulic operation, test num ber tw o will
identify the faulty part. Before perform ing hydraulic circuit
test, carefully check belt tension and condition o f driving
pulley.
Test Number One—Oil Circuit Open
Engine m ust be a t norm al operating tem perature. Inflate
fro n t tires to correct pressure. All tests are m ade w ith engine
idling, so adjust engine idle speed to correct specifications

listed in Section
and proceed as follows:
a.
With engine n o t running, disconnect flexible pres
sure line from pum p and install Tool J-5176 as
show n in Figure 31. Gauge m ust be betw een shut-
o ff valve and pum p. S hut-off valve m ust be open.
b.
Remove filler cap from pum p reservoir and check
fluid level. Fill p um p reservoir to full m ark o n dip

times w ith o u t rolling vehicle to change tire-to-floor
contact area.
c.
H old steering wheel against a stop m om entarily and
read pressure gauge. If the m axim um pressure is
below specifications, a faulty hydraulic circuit is
indicated. To determ ine w hich p art is faulty, p ro
ceed w ith test num ber tw o.
Test Number Two—Oil Circuit Closed
a.
Slowly tu rn shut-off valve on J-5176 to close
position an d read pressure indicated on gauge.
Quickly reopen valve to avoid pum p damage. If
indicated pressure is less than specification, pum p
o u tp u t is below requirem ent and pum p may be
considered faulty. I f pressure indicated is w ithin
specifications, it may be safely assum ed th a t the
external hoses, connections or steering gear is at
fault.
N O T E : I f pump proves fau lty in test number tw o,
test should be repeated after pump is repaired and
installed in vehicle. This w ill provide a means of
checking the repairs made to the pump and the
condition o f the steering gear, which may also be
fau lty.
3.
Remove the flexible coupling to steering shaft flange
bolts.
4.
