Grease may be used to hold the locks in
place w hile releasing the compressor tool.
CY LIN D E R HEAD ASSEMBLY
N O T E :
Remove le ft or right seats as required to
obtain
necessary
working
heads.
Removal
1.
Remove intake m anifold as outlined.
2.
Remove exhaust m anifold as outlined.
3.
Remove valve m echanism as outlined.
4.
Drain cylinder block o f coolant.
5.
Remove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gasket.
Place cylinder head on tw o blocks o f wood to prevent
damage.
Installation
C A U T IO N :
The gaskets surfaces on both the head
and the block must be clean of any foreign m atter
and free of nicks or heavy scratches. Cylinder bolt
threads in the block and threads on the cylinder
head bolts must be clean. (D irt w ill affect bolt
torque).
1.
On engines using a STEEL gasket, coat b o th sides o f a
new gasket w ith a good sealer. Spread th e sealer th in and
even. One m eth o d o f applying th e sealer th a t will assure
the proper coat is w ith th e use o f a paint roller. Too
m uch sealer m ay h old th e gasket away from the head or
block.

C A U T IO N :
Use no sealer on engines using a com ­
position S T E E L ASBESTOS gasket.
2.
Place the gasket in position over the dow el pins w ith the
bead up.
3.
Carefully guide the cylinder head in to place over the
dowel pins and gasket.
4.
Coat
threads
o f
cylinder
com pound and install bolts finger tight.
5.
Tighten each cylinder head b o lt a little at a tim e in the
sequence show n in th e torq ue sequence chart until the
specified torque is reached.
6
. Install exhaust m anifolds as outlined.
7.
Install intake m anifold as outlined.
8
. Install and adjust valve m echanism as outlined.
Oil Pan
Removal
1.
Raise vehicle on a hoist and drain engine oil.
2.
On
vehicles
equipped
remove converter housing under pan.
3.
Remove starter inboard b o lt, swing sta rter aside.
4.
Remove oil pan and discard gaskets and seals.
Installation
1.
Thoroughly clean all gasket and seal surfaces on oil pan,
cylinder block, crankcase fro n t cover and rear m ain
bearing cap.
2.
Install new oil pan side gaskets on cylinder block using
gasket sealer as a retainer. Install new oil pan rear seal in
rear main bearing cap groove, w ith ends b u ttin g side
gaskets. Install new oil pan fro n t seal in groove in
crankcase fro n t cover w ith ends b u ttin g side gaskets (Fig.
10V).
3.
Install oil pan and torq u e bolts to specifications.
4.
Install starter attaching bolts. T orque bolts to specifica­
tions.
5.
Install converter housing under pan.
6
. Low er vehicle on hoist, fill engine w ith oil, sta rt engine
and check for leaks.
Oil Pump
Removal
1.
Remove oil pan as outlined.
2.
Remove p um p to rear main bearing cap bolt and remove
pum p and extension shaft.
Installation
1.
Assemble pum p and extension shaft to rear m ain bearing
cap, aligning slot on to p end o f extension shaft w ith drive
tang on low er end o f d istributor drive shaft.
2.
Install pum p to rear bearing cap b o lt and to rq u e to
specifications.
N O T E :
Installed position o f oil pump screen is
w ith bottom edge parallel to oil pan rails.
