N O T E :
If threads are n o t clean and smooth, ball
studs may

in sockets when attem pting to
tighten nut.
2. Install the relay rod to the idler arm and pitm an arm ball
studs, making certain th e seals are in place. Install and
torque the n u t and then install the co tter pin (see
Specifications Section for specific instructions).
3. Install the tie rods to the relay rod as previously de­
scribed under " Tie R o d —Installation." L ubricate the tie
rod ends.
4 . Remove the vehicle from the hoist.
5. A djust toe-in (see Section 3) and align steering wheel as
described previously in this section under Steer-Wheel
Alignment and High P oint Centering.
Idler Arm
Removal
1. Place vehicle on a h oist.
2. Remove the cotter pin and castellated n u t from ball stud
at the relay rod. Remove the ball stud from the relay rod
by tapping on the relay rod boss w ith a ham m er, while
using a heavy ham m er as a backing (fig. 27).
3. Remove the idler arm to fram e bolt and remove the idler
arm assembly.
Installation
1. P ostion the idler arm on the fram e and install the
m ounting bolts (special plain washers under b olt heads);
torque the nuts to specifications.
2. Make sure th a t the threads on the ball stud and in the ball
stud n u t are perfectly clean and sm ooth. Check condition
o f ball stud seal; replace if necessary.
N O T E :
I f threads are not clean and smooth, ball
stud may turn in the socket when attem pting to
tighten nut.
3.
Install the idler arm ball stu d in the relay rod, making
certain the seal is positioned properly; install the nu t and
c o tter pin as outlined in the Specifications section at the
rear o f this m anual.
4.
Remove the vehicle from the hoist.
Pitman Arm
Removal
1. Place vehicle on a hoist.
2. Remove the co tter pin and castellated n u t from ball stud
at the relay rod. Remove the ball stud from the relay rod
by tapping on the relay rod boss w ith a ham m er, while
using a heavy ham m er as a backing (fig. 27).

Remove the pitm an arm to pitm an shaft n u t. Mark
relationship o f the arm to the shaft and th en remove the
pitm an arm using Tool J-6632 or J-5504 (fig. 10).
Installation
1. Install the pitm an arm on the pitm an shaft, lining up the
m arks m ade upon rem oval. Install and torque the nut.
2. Make sure th a t the threads on the ball stud and in the ball
stud n u t are perfectly clean and sm ooth. Check condition
o f ball stud seal; replace if necessary.
N O T E :
If threads are not clean and smooth, ball
stud may turn in the socket when attem pting to
tighten nut.
3. Install the pitm an arm ball stud to the relay rod, making
certain the seal is positioned properly; install the nu t and
co tter pin as outlined in the Specifications Section at the
rear o f this m anual.
4 . Remove the vehicle from the hoist.
Steering Arms
If, through collision or other dam age, it becom es necessary
to remove and replace either steering arm , proceed as follows:
Removal
1. Place vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove tie rod from steering arm as outlined in this
section.
3. Remove front w heel, h u b and brake drum as a unit by
removing hub cap and dust cap, co tter pin from spindle
n u t and the spindle n u t. Pull assembly tow ard outside o f
vehicle. If removal is difficult, it m ay be necessary to
back o ff brake adjustm ent to increase brake shoe-to-drum
clearance; see H ydraulic Brake A djustm ent, Sec. 5.
4 . With wheel and drum assembly rem oved, steering arm
retaining bolt heads are accessible and removal o f steering
arm from vehicle m ay be accom plished by removing
retaining nuts.
Installation
1. Place steering arm in position on vehicle and install
retaining bolts. N ote th at longer bolt is installed in
forw ard hole.
2.
Install nuts and torque to specifications.
3.
Pack wheel bearings using a high quality wheel bearing
lubricant. Install bearings and w heel-hub-brake drum
assembly rem oved previously.
4.
Install keyed washer and spindle nut. Proceed as outlined
under ''F ro n t Wheel B earin g s-A dju st" in Section 3.
5.
Install tie rod stud in steering arm . Be sure th a t th e dust
cover is in place on ball stud.
6
. Install castellated n u t on ball stud, tighten to specifica­
tions and install co tter pin (see Specifications Section).
7.
Remove vehicle from hoist.
8
. Following directions given in Section 3 to check corner­
ing w heel relationship and toe-in; correct as required.
