If contact points have been in service, they
should be cleaned w ith a point file before adjusting
with a feeler gauge.
Check distributor point spring tension (contact
point pressure) with a spring gauge h ooked to
breaker lever at the co n tact and pull exerted at 90
degrees to the breaker lever. The points should be

Excessive point pressure will cause excessive
wear on the points, cam and rubbing block. Weak
point pressure perm its bouncing or clattering, re
sulting in arcing and burning o f the points and an
ignition miss at high speed.

C onnect a voltm eter across the b attery term inals and
measure the term inal voltage o f the b attery during
cranking (disconnect the coil prim ary lead at the negative
term inal during this check to prevent engine from firing).
If the term inal voltage is less than 9.0 volts at room
tem perature, approxim ately 80° ± 20° F., the battery
should be further checked. See Section
tests.
Inspect for signs o f corrosion on b attery , cables and
surrounding area, loose or broken carriers, cracked or
bulged cases, dirt and acid, electrolyte leakage and low
electrolyte level. Fill cells to proper level w ith colorless,
odorless, drinking water.
The to p o f the b attery should be clean and the
b attery hold-dow n bolts properly tightened. Particular
care should be taken to see th a t the to p o f the b attery is
kept clean o f acid film and dirt. When cleaning batteries,
