STEERING 9-8
1. Install the toe pan seal o n to the colum n jacket.
2. L ubricate all bearing surfaces on the shift tube.
3. Place the felt seal o n to the shift tube (next to spring) and
then place the shift tube in th e jacket.
4. 3—Speed Columns— T em porarily install spacer, 1 st-reverse
shift lever and low er adjusting ring. Place a block o f w ood
on top o f the adjusting ring and tap until the shift tube
bottom s. Remove adjusting ring, shift lever and spacer.
N O T E :
The shift tube spring retainer must be
bottomed against the jacket stops.
Automatic Columns—Align the three holes in the selector
plate w ith the three holes in the jack et, position the
clam ping ring and install the three screws.
5. 3-Speed Columns— L ubricate and install the spacer and

st-reverse shift lever (tang o f lever tow ards to p o f
colum n).

. Install low er bearing in the adjusting ring and then install
the adjusting ring, clamp and screws.
7. Install the shift lever housing seat and bushing to upper
end of housing.

. T hread directional signal sw itch wiring harness through
the sw itch and shift lever housings, lubricate the inner
diam eter o f the shift housing, and then place the shift
lever housing onto the upper end o f the colum n.
9. Install the switch housing plastic washer assembly. Press
the upper bearing into the sw itch contact support.
10.
Install the directional signal sw itch housing, contact
su p p o rt, bearing and sw itch and torque the sw itch screws
to 25 in. lbs.

11. Install the colum n wiring harness cover.
12. Install the directional signal and gearshift levers.
13. A djust the shift tube as outlined under " Shifter Tube
A d ju stm en t."
14. Loosely install the lower bearing preload spring and
clam p o n to the steering shaft.
15. Slide the steering shaft assembly up through the colum n
assembly. Install the directional signal cancelling cam ,
steering shaft n ut and flat washer.
Installation—M andatory Sequence
1. A djust the colum n lower bearing preload by positioning
the spring and clamp to m aintain the dim ension as show n
in Figure 4.
2. Install the plastic spacers o n to the flexible coupling
alignm ent pins.
3. F rom inside the vehicle, carefully insert the lower end o f
the colum n through the toe pan opening, guiding the
steering shaft flange onto the flexible coupling. Install
and torque the flange to coupling bolts.
C A U T IO N : The steering coupling to steering shaft
fastener is an im portant attaching part in that it
could affect the performance o f vital components
and systems, and/or could result in major repair
expense. It must be replaced w ith one of the same
part number or w ith an equivalent part if replace­
m ent becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement
part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque
values must be used as specified during reassembly
to assure proper retention o f this part.
