The fu n ctio n o f th e starting system , com posed o f the
starting m o tor, solenoid and b attery , is to crank the engine.
The b attery supplies th e electrical energy, th e solenoid com ­
pletes th e circuit to th e starting m otor, and the m o to r th en
does th e actual w ork o f cranking th e engine.
The starting m o to r (Fig. Is) consists prim arily o f the drive
mechanism, fram e, arm ature, brushes, and field windings. The
LUBRICATION
The gasoline engine type starting m otors have graphite and
oil im pregnated bronze bearings and therefore require no
periodic lubrication betw een m ajor overhauls.

starting m otor is a
pole shoes and four fields, connected w ith the arm ature. The
alum inum drive end housing is extended to enclose th e entire
shift lever and plunger m echanism , protecting them from dirt,
splash, and icing. The flange m ounted solenoid switch operates
the overrunning clutch drive by means o f a linkage to the shift
lever.
RESISTANCE CHECKS
A lthough the starting m oto r cannot be checked against
specifications on the car, a check can be made for excessive
resistance in the starting circuit. Place a voltm eter across
