CLEANING FUEL SYSTEMS
If trouble is due to contam inated fuel or foreign m aterial
th a t has been p u t in to the tan k , it can usually be cleaned. I f
tank is rusted internally, it should be replaced.
1. D isconnect b attery and ignition coil prim ary wire (+ wire
on ignition coil).
2. Drain fuel tank. (See DRAINING FUEL TANK.)
3. Remove fuel tank. (See REMOVAL OF TANK.)
4. Remove fuel inlet filter at carburetor and inspect for
contam ination. I f filter is plugged, replace. (Leave fuel
line disconnected.)

Locate tan k away from heat, flame or o th e r source of
ignition. Remove fuel gauge tank unit and inspect
condition o f filter. If filter is contam inated, a new filter
should be installed upon reassembly.
Com plete draining o f tank by rocking it and allowing fuel
to run o u t o f tan k u nit hole.
Purge fuel tan k w ith steam or running h o t w ater for at
least five m inutes. Pour w ater o u t o f tank u n it hole.
(R ock tank to assure com plete removal o f w ater.)
IM P O R T A N T : This procedure w ill not remove fuel
vapor. Do not attem pt any repair on tank or filler
neck where heat or flam e is required.
D isconnect inlet fuel line at p um p and use air pressure to
clean fuel line and fuel return line (if equipped). A pply
air pressure in the direction fuel norm ally flows through
line.
Use low air pressure to clean pipes on tank unit.
Install new filter on fuel tank u n it if required. Install fuel
tank u n it w ith new gasket in to tank and install tank.
Connect tan k u n it wires and all fuel lines except pum p to
carburetor line. (See REMOVAL OF TANK for proper
procedure).
C onnect a hose to fuel line at carburetor; insert other end
o f hose in to a one gallon fuel can.
C onnect battery cable. MAKE SURE IGNITION COIL
PRIM ARY WIRE (+ TERM INAL) IS DISCONNECTED.
P u t six gallons o f clean fuel in tan k and operate starter to
pum p tw o quarts o f fuel into fuel can. This will purge
fuel pum p.
Remove hose and connect fuel line to carburetor.
C onnect coil prim ary wire.
