INSTRUMENT TEST
A num ber o f suppliers have approved testing equipm ent
available. These testers have a program m ed test procedure
consisting o f a series. o f tim ed discharge and charge events,
requiring approxim ately 2 to 3 m inutes, th a t will determ ine
the condition o f the B attery w ith a high degree o f accuracy.
When using these testers, the procedure recom m ended by the
tester m anufacturer should be follow ed. Batteries should n o t
be charged prior to testing or doing so may alter th e test
results. I f a tester is n o t available for testing, the " Specific
Gravity Cell Com parison T est" m ay be used or an alternate
m ethod, b u t w ith a sacrifice in testing accuracy.
N O T E :
New energizers which have become com
pletely discharged over a relatively long period of
tim e, such as during vehicle storage, should be
tested by the hydrom eter method. Energizers dis
charged to this degree cannot be accurately tested
using equipm ent requiring load capability compari
son tests.
LOAD TEST
In add itio n to th e instru m en t test and specific gravity
hydrom eter
te st,
the
follow ing load test may also be
perform ed to check th e con dition o f the b attery .
N O T E :
Equipm ent to perform the test may be
procured fo r local suppliers o f testing equipment.
T o begin, charge the b a tte ry , if necessary, until all cells are
1.200
at least
specific gravity.
1. I f unable to obtain specific gravity 1.200 @ 8 0 °F. in all
cells, replace battery.
2.
I f able to obtain a specific gravity o f 1.200 or m ore @
80°F . in all cells, remove the vent caps and connect a 300
am p. load for 15 seconds.
a.
I f smoke occurs in one or m ore cells, replace the
b attery .
b.
If sm oke does n o t occur proceed to step 3.
3. Place a therm om eter in one cell and apply a specified
load from chart N o. 1. Read the voltage at 15 seconds
w ith load co nnected, th en remove load and read electro
lyte
tem perature. Com pare tem perature and voltage
readings w ith chart No. 2.
a.
I f reading is less than voltage on chart N o. 2, replace
b attery .
b.
I f reading is same as or greater than voltage on chart
No. 2, fully charge, clean and retu rn b attery to
service.

FULL CHARGE HYDRO M ETER TEST
w ith testing equipm ent or "Specific G ravity Cell Com parison
T est" b u t w hich subsequently fail in service.
hydrom eter readings less th an 1.230 co rrected from tem p er
ature indicate th e B attery is defective and should be replaced.
readings above 1.310 co rrected for tem perature indicate th at
the cells have been im properly filled (activation) or im properly
serviced. Poor service and short B attery life will result.

• Rem ove th e B attery from the vehicle, and adjust the
electrolyte
level as necessary, b y adding colorless,
odorless, drinking w ater.
• F ully charge the B attery at the Slow Charging rate as
covered in the section en titled "Charging Procedures."
• Measure th e specific gravity o f the electrolyte in each cell
and in terp ret as follows:

B attery installation varies depending on th e tru ck model
• C onnect grounded term inal o f B attery last to avoid short
circuits w hich m ay damage the electrical system .
• Be sure there are n o t foreign objects in the carrier, so
th a t the new B attery will rest properly in the b o tto m of
the carrier.
• Tighten the hold-dow n evenly u ntil snug (60-80 in. lbs.)
D o n o t draw dow n tight enough to d isto rt or crack the
case or cover.
• Be sure th e cables are in good condition an d the term inal
studs are clean and tight. Make sure the ground cable is
clean and tight at engine block or fram e.
• Check polarity to be sure th e B attery is n o t reversed w ith
respect to th e generating system .
