N O T E :
When lubricating components during the
follo w in g
installation
sequence,
purpose lithium soap grease.
1.
Install th e dash panel seal, m ounting plate and the
instrum ent panel seal on the colum n.
2. Colum n S hift M odels - Press a new shift lever spring in to
the shift lever housing.
3.
Slide the shift lever housing over the upper end o f the
colum n.
4.
Place the wave w asher and lock plate in position. Work
th e lock plate in to the notches by tipping the plate
tow ard the housing (com pressing the wave washer) at the
o pen side o f the colum n. L ubricate the lock plate and
u pper end o f the shift tube.
5.
Carefully install th e shift tu b e into th e low er end o f th e
colum n (m ake sure th e foam seal is at the low er en d o f
th e shift tube). Align th e keyw ay in the tube w ith the
key in the shift lever housing and com plete installation o f
th e shift tube using Tool J-22549 (fig. 24). The shift
lever housing key m ust b o tto m in the shift tube slot to
be fully installed. Remove Tool J-22549 from th e col­
um n. Lubricate and push foam seal in flush w ith colum n
housing.
C A U T IO N :
Do N o t hamm er or force the tube
when installing in the column.

. Pull up on th e shift lever housing (to com press the wave
w asher) and install th e th ru st washer and retaining ring.
Be sure th e ring is seated in b o th slots o f the shift tube.
7.
L ubricate the I.D. o f the bearing housing support and
install the support, aligning the b olt holes in the support
w ith the b o lt holes in the lock plate. Install the four
support screws and torqu e to 45 in. lbs.

. Assemble the steering shaft as follows:
a.
L ubricate and assemble the centering spheres and
preload spring.

Install the spheres into th e upper (sho rt) shaft and
90°.

Install the low er shaft 90° to the upper shaft and
over the centering spheres. Slowly straighten the
shafts while com pressing the preload spring.
9.
Install the shaft assembly into the housing from the
upper end.
10.
Install the lower bearing and adapter, bearing reinforce­
m ent, wire clip, p o t jo in t coupling and lower shaft as
described under " L ow er Bearing Installation" .

Assemble the bearing housing as follows:
a.
Press th e new upper and low er bearing races into
the bearing housing.
b.
L ubricate and install th e bearings into th e bearing
races.
c.
Place the lock shoe springs in position in the
housing. Install each shoe in place and com press the
spring until a suitable size straight punch can be
used to hold th e shoes in position (it m ay be
necessary to acquire assistance to install th e shoes).
Once th e shoes are in place, drive in the shoe
retaining pin.

Install the shoe release lever and drive in the pivot
pin.

Install th e tilt release lever.
f.
L ubricate the shoes and release lever.
12.
Install the bearing housing assembly to the support. Hold
th e tilt release lever in the " u p " position u ntil the shoes
nave fully engaged the support. Lubricate and install the
bearing housing pivot pins. Press the pins in flush w ith
th e housing.
13.
Place the housing in the full " u p " position and then
install tilt spring and retainer (tap ered end o f spring
first). Push into the housing approxim ately
ro ta te cou nter clockwise
14.
L ubricate and install the upper bearing upper race, race
seat and locknut. Tighten the lo ck n u t (using Socket
J-22599)
to remove the lash and then fu rth er tighten

position).
15.
Remove th e tilt release lever.
