DETENT CABLE ADJUSTMENT
Refer to Figure 2
L-6 Engines
1.
Remove air cleaner.
2.
Insert screwdriver on each side o f snap lock and pry up
to release lock.
3.
Com press locking tab and disconnect snap lock assembly
from bracket.
4.
A tta ch snap lock assembly to accelerator control lever
and install retaining ring " E " .
5. Pull carb u reto r lever to W.O.T. position (check W.O.T.
stop on carbureto r).
6
. W ith carb uretor lever fixed in the W.O.T. position, grasp
cable casing and pull rearw ard u n til W.O.T. stop in
transm ission is felt.
N O T E :
Do
not mistake detent which must be
traveled through
in order to
W .O .T. stop.
TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT
Removal
1. Place van on hoist and remove oil pan drain plug to drain
oil.
N O T E :
If desired, the oil may be drained after
transmission removal.
2. Disconnect the vacuum m odulator line and the speed­
om eter drive cable fitting at the transm ission. Tie lines
o u t o f the w ay.
3. D isconnect m anual contro l lever rod and detent cable
from transm ission.
4. D isconnect prop shaft from transm ission.
5. Install suitable transm ission lift equipm ent to jack or
oth er lifting device and attac h on transm ission.

. D isconnect engine rear m ount on transm ission extension,
then remove the transm ission support crossm em ber.
7. Remove converter underpan, scribe flyw heel-converter
relationship for assem bly, then remove the flywheel-to-
converter attaching bolts.

. S upport engine at the oil pan rail w ith a jack or other
suitable brace capable o f supporting the engine weight
w hen the transm ission is removed.
9. Lower the rear o f the transm ission slightly so th at the
upper transm ission housing-to-engine attaching bolts can
be reached using a universal socket and a long extension.
Remove upper bolts.
C A U T IO N :
It is best to have an assistant observe
clearance of upper engine components w hile the
transmission rear end is being lowered.

7.
Holding lever and cable in above position, push snap lock
on cable dow nw ard un til to p is flush w ith cable.
N O T E :
Do not lubricate cable.

. Install air cleaner.
V -8 Engines
1.
Remove air cleaner.
2.
Disengage plastic snap lock on d etent cable b y inserting a
screwdriver on each side o f snap lock and pry up to
release lock and com pressing locking tabs.
3.
Place carburetor lever in wide o pen th ro ttle (W.O.T.)
position (m ake sure carburetor lever is against W.O.T.
stop).
N O T E :
(D E T E N T cable must be through detent)
4.
W ith carburetor lever in W.O.T. position push snap lock
on d etent cable back into housing u n til to p is flush w ith
cable retainer housing.
5.
C heck linkage for proper operation.
N O T E :
Do not lubricate cable.

. Install air cleaner.
10. Remove rem ainder o f transm ission housing-to-engine a t­
taching bolts.
11. Remove the transm ission by moving it slightly to the rear
and dow nw ard, th en remove from beneath the vehicle
and transfer to a w ork bench.
N O T E :
Observe converter when moving the trans­
mission rearward. If it does not move w ith trans­
mission, pry it free of flyw heel before proceeding.
C A U T IO N :
Keep fro n t of transmission upward to
prevent the converter from falling out. Install suit­
able converter holding tool after removal from the
engine.
Installation
1. M ount transm ission on transm ission lifting equipm ent
installed on jack or other lifting device.
2. Remove converter holding tool.
C A U T IO N :
Do not perm it converter to move fo r­
ward after removal of holding tool.
3. Raise transm ission into place at rear o f engine and install
transm ission case to engine upper m ounting bolts, th en
install rem ainder o f the m ounting bolts. T orque bolts to
20-30 ft. lbs.
4. Remove support from beneath engine, then raise rear of
transm ission to final position.
5. If scribed during rem oval, align scribe marks on flywheel
and converter cover. Install converter to flywheel a t­
taching nuts and b o lts. T orque to 30-35 ft. lbs.
6
. Install converter underpan.
