E xtend b olt from to o l J-23742 to loosen ball stud in
steering knuckle. When stud is loosened, remove tool and
ball stud nut.

. Pull the brake disc and knuckle assembly up o ff the ball
stud and support the upper arm w ith a block o f w ood so
th a t assembly is o u t o f w orking area.
C A U T IO N :
Do not put undue stress on the brake
line flex hose.
7.
Install tools J-9519-10 and J-9519-7 as show n in Fig. 12.
N O T E :
It w ill be necessary to alter tool J-9519-10
as illustrated in Fig. 13 and install a 3 " ID pipe as
shown if working on a 20 or 30 series vehicle.

. T u rn hex head screw until ball jo in t is free o f control
arm .

Remove tools and ball jo in t.
Installation (Fig. 14)
1.
S tart the new ball jo in t into th e control arm and install
J-9519-10 and J-9519-9 as shown.
N O T E :
Position bleed vent in rubber boot facing
inward.
2. T urn hex head screw until ball jo in t is seated in control
arm.
3.
Low er the upper arm and m ate the steering knuckle to
the lower ball stud.
4.
Install ball stud n u t and torque as follows: All series,
80-100 ft. lbs. plus additional torque to align co tter pin
hole not to exceed 130 ft. lbs. m axim um . Never back o ff
to align co tter pin.
5.
Install a lube fitting and lube the jo in t.

. Install tire and wheel an d low er vehicle to floor.
Upper-Removal
1.
Raise vehicle o n hoist. I f a fram e hoist is used, it will be
necessary to support the low er control arm w ith a floor
jack.
2.
Remove co tter pin from upper ball stud and loosen stud
nut (tw o turns) b u t do not remove nut.
3.
Install J-23742 betw een the ball studs as show n in Figure
9.
C A U T IO N :
Before proceeding w ith Step 4, be sure
lower control arm is supported as pointed out in
Step 1.

E xtend bolt from to ol J-23742 to loosen ball stud in
steering knuckle. When stu d is loose, remove tool and
stud nu t.
5.
C enter punch rivet heads and drill o u t rivets.

. Remove ball jo in t assembly.
Installation
1.
Install new service ball jo in t, using bolts and nuts sup­
plied w ith jo in t, to upper arm . T orque nuts to 45 ft. lbs.
2.
Mate ball stud to steering knuckle and install stud nut.
3.
T orque the ball stud n u t as follows:
10 Series 40-60 ft. lbs. plus additional torqu e to align
c o tter pin n o t to exceed 90 ft. lbs. Never back o ff to
align co tter pin. 20-30 Series 80-100 ft. lbs. plus addi­
tional to rque to align co tter pin n ot to exceed 130 ft. lbs.
Never back o ff to align pin.
4.
Install co tter pin.
5.
Install lube fitting and lube new jo in t.

. Install tire and wheel.
7.
Low er vehicle to floor.

STEERING KNUCKLE/STEERING ARM

C A U T IO N :
It
is recommended th at vehicle be
raised and supported on a tw in-post hoist so that
the fro n t coil spring remains compressed, yet the
wheel and steering knuckle assembly remain acces­
sible. If a fram e hoist is used, support lower control
arm w ith an adjustable jackstand to safely retain
spring in its curb height position.
Removal
1.
Raise vehicle on hoist and support low er co n tro l arm as
n o te d above.
2.
Remove hub cap w heel cover an d w heel nuts.
3.
W ithdraw wheel and tire, remove caliper as outlined
u nd er " F ro n t Wheel H ub"
knuckle spindle.
4.
Remove disc splash shield b o lts securing the shield to the
steering knuckle.
5.
Refer to Section 9 -S te e rin g Linkage - Tie R od, for
service operations.
