3. P osition bearing cup in h u b —thick edge o f cup tow ard
shoulder in h u b - th e n , using J-8114 and J-8092 cup
installer press cup into hub until it seats on hub shoulder
(fig. 23). Make certain th a t cup is not cocked and th a t it
is fully seated against shoulder.
Replace outer bearing assembly as follows:
N O T E :
Inner bearing assembly must be removed
before attem pting to replace outer bearing assembly.
1. Using a punch o f suitable length, tap bearing outer race
away from bearing retaining ring (fig. 24). T hen remove
retaining ring from h u b — using pliers (fig. 24).
2. Drive out bearing using a brass drift.
3. Place inner race and roller assembly in h u b —larger O.D.
o f roller assembly tow ards outer end o f h u b —then posi­
tion bearing cup in h u b —thin edge o f cup tow ard outer
end o f h u b — press cup into hub, using T ool J-2223.
4. W ithdraw cup installer and install retainer ring using
pliers (fig. 24).

5. Press the bearing cup into positive co n tact w ith retainer
ring.
N O T E :
The
bearing cup-to-retainer ring seating
procedure is essential to assure th at an accurate
wheel bearing adjustment w ill be obtained, and that
the
adjustment
w ill
operation.
Drum-IMondemountable-Type (Fig. 20)
Replacement
C onstruction, o f th e nondem ountable-type hub and drum
assembly, is such th a t replacem ent can n o t be accom plished
w ith the hub assembly installed on the vehicle.
1. Separate th e drum and hub by removing the drum -to-hub
retaining bolts, hub stud nuts, or by pressing out the
wheel studs, as applicable.
2. Position brake drum to hub assem bly, m aking certain
th a t all drain holes are in alignment.
3. A pply a light, even coating o f sealing com pound to the
hub oil deflector contact surface, and position deflector
to drum .
4. Install drum -to-hub retaining bolts, hub stud nuts, or
press wheel studs into drum , as applicable.

Wheel Bolt

Replacement
Wheel bolts are serrated and may also be swaged in place;
however, replacem ent procedure rem ains the same for bo th
types o f installation.
Press bolts o u t o f h u b flange (as illustrated in Figure 25)
and press new bolts in to place, m aking sure they are a tight fit.
If all bolts were rem oved, be sure that hub oil deflector is in
position under bolt heads.

Hub Stud

Replacement
Hub studs can be rem oved and replaced by using a conven­
tional stud remover and replacer. Make sure that studs are
firm ly b o tto m ed in holes and th a t threads are n o t damaged
during installation.

Wheel Hub Oil Seal

Replacement
Pry old seal from its location in the hub bore, using care so
as n ot to damage bore surface. T horoughly clean all oil and
not
loosen
during
vehicle
