1. Slide one pedal shaft bushing over shaft, install shaft in
support enough to still clear pedal bum per stop, hook
pedal retu rn (or overcenter) spring to pedal, th en rotate
pedal forw ard o f bum per stop; slide shaft into position in
support and release pedal against bum per stop.
2. Install clutch pedal shaft bushing over pedal shaft end
and into place in sleeve.
3. Assemble pedal push rod lever over pedal shaft and install
bolts, washers, and n u t. T orque to 25 ft. lbs.
4. A djust clutch pedal free travel as needed.
CLUTCH CROSS-SHAFT (Fig. 1)
Removal
1.
D isconnect clutch fo rk retu rn spring at fork.
2.
D isconnect pedal pull ro d at cross-shaft lever and allow
clutch fork push rod to hang free from low er lever.
3.
Rem ove b rack et to fram e bolts and slide cross-shaft on
engine ball stud u n til fram e bracket clears low er fram e
flange and th en slide shaft o ff stud and o u t o f vehicle.
4.
Rem ove clutch fo rk push rod from cross-shaft lever if
necessary.
5.
Reverse removal procedure to install.

P R E LIM IN A R Y INSPECTION
There are m any things w hich affect good clutch operation.
T herefore, it is necessary, before perform ing any major clutch
operations, to make a prelim inary inspection to determ ine
w hether or not the trouble is actually in the clutch.
1.
Check the clutch pedal and make sure th a t th e pedal has
at least 3 /4 " -1" free travel.
2.
Check the clutch pedal bushing fo r wear and for sticking
on th e shaft or loose m ountings.
3.
Lubricate the pedal linkage.
4.
Tighten all fro n t and rear engine m ounting bolts. Should
th e m ountings be oil soaked, it will be necessary to
replace them . Refer to S ection
service and overhaul manuals.

CLUTCH RETRACTING SPRING REPLACEMENT
A rattle in the clutch assembly at idling speeds w ith the
clutch released or failure o f the clutch to release properly may
be caused by insufficient tension on the pressure pl^te retract­
ing springs. These troubles can easily be checked b y replacing
the springs, as follows:
1. Remove the clutch housing underpan.
2. Hand crank the engine until one retracting spring attach ­
ing bolt is at the b o tto m . Remove the bolt and retracting
spring and install a new spring.
3. Replace the other retracting springs in the same m anner.
4.
Replace clutch housing underpan.
