• Install and adjust drive belt as outlined above.
• Hold pum p pulley from turning by com pressing drive
belt then torque pum p pulley bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (Fig.
6T-27).
• Recheck drive belt tension and adjust if required.
PUMP FILTE R
Replacement
• Remove
drive belt and pum p pulley as previously
outlined.
• Pry loose outer disc o f filter fan.
• Pull rem aining p o rtio n o f filter o ff w ith pliers (Fig.
6T-28).
N O T E :
Care should be taken to prevent fragments
fro m entering the air intake hole.
• Install the new filter by draw ing it on w ith the pulley
and pulley bolts (Fig. 6T-29). D o n o t atte m p t to install a
filter by ham m ering it on or pressing it on.
• Draw the filter dow n evenly by alternately torquing the
bolts. Make certain th a t th e o u te r edge o f the filter slips
into the housing. The slight am ou nt o f interference w ith
the housing bore is norm al.
N O T E :
A new filte r may squeal upon initial opera
tion until its O .D . sealing lip has w orn in.
AIR M A N IF O LD , HOSE A N D TUBE
Inspection
• Inspect all hoses for deterioration or holes.
• Inspect all tubes for cracks or holes.
• Check all hose and tube connections.
• Check all tube and hose routing. Interference m ay cause
wear.

EMISSION CON TR O L SYSTEM 6T-17
• If leak is suspected on the pressure side o f the system or
any tubes and/or hoses have been disconnected on the
pressure side, the connections should be checked for
leaks w ith a soapy w ater solution.
• With the pum p running, bubbles will form if a leak exists
(Fig. 6T-30).
Replacement
• To replace any hose an d/or tub e, note routing then
remove hose(s) an d/or tube(s) as required.
C A U T IO N :
The 1 /4 " pipe threads at the cylinder
head on L-6 or th e exhaust manifolds on V 8 are a
straight pipe thread. Do not use a 1 /4 " tapered pipe
tap. The hoses o f the A .I.R . System are a special
material to withstand high tem perature. No other
type hose should be substituted.
• Install new hose(s) an d /o r tube(s), ro uting them as when
removed.
• Tighten all connections.
N O T E :
Use anti-seize compound on threads o f the
air
m anifold
to
exhaust
connections.
CHECK V A LV E
Inspection
• The check valve should be inspected whenever the hose is
disconnected from the check valve or whenever check
valve failure is suspected. (A pum p th a t had becom e
inoperative and h ad show n indications o f having exhaust
gases in the pum p w ould indicate check valve failure.)
• Orally blow through the check valve (to w ard air m ani
fold) then attem p t to suck back through check valve.
Flow should only be in one direction (to w ard the air
m anifold) (Fig. 6T-31).
