7. Reassemble the p itm an arm to the pitm an shaft, lining up
the m arks m ade at disassembly; torque th e n u t to
specifications.

. C onnect the battery ground cable.
PITMAN SHAFT SEAL
If pitm an shaft seal leakage occurs, the steering gear m ust be
com pletely rem oved from the vehicle to perform th e replace­
m ent procedure.
Replacement
1. Remove the steering gear as outlined under "Steering
G ear-Rem oval" .
2. Loosen the lash adjuster locknut and tu rn the lash
adjuster a few turns counter-clockw ise.
3. Pull side cover and pitm an shaft from gear housing as a
u n it. Do n o t separate side cover from pitm an shaft.
4. Pry the pitm an shaft seal from gear housing using a screw
driver being careful n o t to damage housing bore.
C A U T IO N :
Inspect the lubricant in the gear for
contam ination. If the lubricant is contaminated in
any way, the gear must be com pletely overhauled as
outlined in the 1 9 72 Overhaul M anual—Section 9.
5. C oat the new seal w ith gear lubricant and install in the
housing using a suitable size socket.

. Pack as m uch new Steering Gear L ubricant (m eeting GM
Specification GM 4673M ) into the ends o f the housing as
it will hold w ith o u t falling o u t the pitm an shaft opening.
7. Place a piece o f tape over the splined end o f the pitm an
shaft and then low er the pitm an shaft and side cover into
the housing.
N O T E :
Before the pitm an shaft is all the way into
the housing, more lubricant can be added in the
center cavity. D O N O T O V E R -F IL L the gear hous­
ing.

. Install a new side cover gasket, align the side cover on the
gear housing, install and torque the side cover screws.
9. Reinstall the steering gear assembly as outlined under
" Steering G ear— Installation" .
C A U T IO N : The pitm an arm to pitman shaft nut,
steering gear to fram e bolts and steering coupling to
steering shaft and worm shaft fastener are im portant
a tt a c h in g p a rts in t h a t they could affect the
performance of vital components and systems, and/or
could result in major repair expense. They must be
replaced w ith one o f the same part number or w ith an
equivalent part if replacement becomes necessary. Do
n o t use a replacement part o f lesser quality or
substitute design. Torque values must be used as
s p e c ifie d d u r in g re a s s e m b ly to assure proper
retention o f this part.
STEERING COLUMN
Removal
1. D isconnect the b attery ground cable.
2. D isconnect the transm ission shifter rods at the colum n
shift levers.
3. Remove the steering shaft flange to flexible coupling
bolts.
4. F rom inside the vehicle, remove the screws from the toe
pan seal and slide the seal up the colum n.
5. Remove the steering wheel as outlined under "Steering
W heel-Removal," and reinstall the shaft n u t and washer.

. All Colum ns— D isconnect the directional signal wiring
harness.
A utom atic Colum ns— D isconnect the co nd u cto r tube (for
transm ission indicator) at the instrum ent panel (fig.
7. Remove the cap screws from the colum n support bracket
at the dash panel.

. Carefully lower and then w ithdraw the colum n assembly,
rotating so that the shift levers clear the toe pan opening.
Disassembly (Fig. 12)
1. Remove the steering wheel n u t and flat w asher and then
slide the steering shaft assembly from the lower end o f
the colum n.
2. Remove the lower bearing preload spring and clamp from
the steering shaft.
3. Drive o u t the shift lever pivot pin and remove the shift
lever.
4. Remove the directional signal cancelling cam. Remove
the directional signal switch lever.
5. Remove the colum n wiring harness cover.

. Remove the directional signal switch screws.
7. R otate the directional signal sw itch housing co un ter­
clockwise and remove the housing from the colum n.
N O T E :
T he housing and switch cannot be fu lly
removed
from
the column
housing is removed.

. Remove the plastic thrust washer assembly and then
remove the shift lever housing from the colum n.
9. Separate the directional signal sw itch, sw itch control
support assembly, directional signal housing and shift
lever housing assemblies.
