The engine wiring harness and forw ard lam p harness co n
nectors are bolted to the fuse panel.
All wiring system s n o t p ro tected by fuses incorporate a
fusible link which provides increased overload p rotection. The
MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENTS
M aintenance o f the lighting units and wiring system consists
o f an occasional check to see th a t all wiring connections are
tight and clean, th a t the lighting units are tightly m o u n ted to
provide good ground and th a t the headlam ps are properly
adjusted. Loose or corroded connections m ay cause a dis
charged battery , difficult starting, dim lights, and possible
damage to generator and regulator. Wire harnesses m ust be
replaced if insulation becom es burned, cracked, or deteri
orated. W henever it is necessary to splice a wire or repair one
th a t is broken, always use solder to bond the splice. Always
use rosin flux solder on electrical connections. Use insulating
tape to cover all splices or bare wires.
When replacing wires, it is im p ortan t th at th e correct size be

Com posite wiring diagrams are included at the end o f this
section. The wire covering color designates a particular circuit
useage.
used. Never replace a wire w ith one o f a smaller size. Fusible
links in the Chevrolet wiring are four gauge sizes smaller than
th e cable it is designed to p ro tect. The links are m arked on the
insulation w ith wire gauge size because o f the heavy insulation
w hich m akes the link appear a heavier gauge th an it actually is.
Each harness and wire m ust be held securely in place by
clips or other holding devices to prevent chafing or wearing
aw ay the insulation due to vibration. T he b o d y wiring harness
routing is show n in Figure 1.
By referring to the wiring diagrams, circuits m ay be tested
for continuous circuit or shorts w ith a conventional test lamp
or low reading volt m eter.
