A slight am ount o f fluid is nearly always
present and acts as lubricant fo r the piston.

Inspect backing plate for oil leakage past axle shaft oil
seals. Install new seals if necessary.
4.
Check all brake flange plate attaching bolts to m ake sure
they are tight. Clean all rust and dirt from shoe co n tact
faces on flange plate (Fig. 25) using fine em ery cloth.
Installation
C A U T IO N :
Make certain to install recommended
shoe and lining assemblies.
1. Inspect new linings and m ake certain there are no nicks
or burrs or bonding m aterial on shoe edge where contact
is m ade w ith brake flange plate or on any o f the contact
surfaces.
C A U T IO N :
Keep hands clean while handling brake
shoes. Do not perm it oil or grease to come in
contact w ith linings.
2.
L ubricate parking brake cable.
3.
L ubricate fulcrum end o f parking brake lever and the
bolt w ith brake lube, then attach lever to secondary shoe
w ith b olt, spring w asher, lock washer and n u t. Make sure
th a t lever moves freely.
4.
Before installation, m ake certain th e adjusting screw is
clean and lubricated properly.
C A U T IO N :
Loose adjustment may occur from an
adjusting screw that is not properly operating. If the
lubrication in the adjusting screw of assembly is
contam inated or destroyed, the adjusting screw
should be thoroughly cleaned and lubricated.
5. C onnect brake shoes together w ith adjusting screw
spring, th en place adjusting screw, socket and n u t in
position.
C A U T IO N :
Make sure the proper adjusting screw
is used (left hand or right hand). The star wheel
should only be installed w ith the star wheel nearest
to the secondary shoe and the adjusting screw spring
inserted to prevent interference with the star wheel.
Make sure right hand thread adjusting screw is on
left side of car and left hand thread adjusting screw
is on right side of car. Make certain star wheel lines
up w ith adjusting hole in backing plate.
If
original
shoe and lining assemblies are being
reinstalled,
they
must
position (as marked at removal).

. Install parking brake cable to lever.
7.
Secure th e prim ary brake shoe (sho rt lining faces fo r­
w ard) first w ith the hold down pin and spring using a pair
o f needle nose pliers. Engage shoes w ith the wheel
cylinder connecting links.

. Install and secure the actu ato r assembly and secondary
brake shoe w ith the hold dow n pin and spring using a
pair o f needle nose pliers. Position parking brake strut
and strut spring.
9.
Install guide plate over anchor pin.
10. Install the wire link.
C A U T IO N :
Do not hook the wire link over the
anchor pin stud with the regular spring hook tool.
Fasten the wire link to the actuator assembly first,
and then place over the anchor pin stud by hand
while holding the adjuster assembly in fu ll down
position.
