lyte tem perature exceeds 125° F ., the charging rate in am peres
m ust be reduced or tem porarily halted to avoid damage to the
b attery.
T he b attery is fully charged w hen over a tw o-hour period at
a low charging rate in am peres all cells are gassing freely (n o t
spewing liquid electrolyte), and no change in specific gravity
occurs. The
full charge specific gravity is
co rrected for electrolyte tem perature w ith the electrolyte level
at the split ring, unless electrolyte loss has occurred due to age
or overfilling in w hich case the specific gravity reading will be
low er. F or th e m ost satisfactory charging, the low er charging
rates in am peres are recom m ended.
I f after prolonged charging a specific gravity o f at least
1.230 on all cells cannot be reached, the b attery is n o t in an

service if it has perform ed satisfactorily in the past.
An " em ergency b oo st charge," consisting of a high charging
rate for a short period o f tim e, m ay be applied as a tem porary
expedient
in order to
crank
procedure usually supplies insufficient b attery reserve to crank
a second and th ird tim e. T herefore, the " em ergency boost
charge" m ust be follow ed by a subsequent charging period of
sufficient duration to restore the b attery to a satisfactory state
o f charge. Refer to the charging guide in this section.
When o u t o f the vehicle, the sealed side term inal battery
will require adapters for the term inals to provide a place for
attach m en t o f the charging leads. A dapters are available
through local parts service.
When the sealed term inal b attery is in the vehicle, the studs
provided in th e wiring harness are suitable for attach m en t of
the charger's leads.
C A U T IO N :
Exercise care when attaching charger
leads to side term inal studs to avoid contact w ith
vehicle metal components which would result in
damage to the battery.
