loosen ball stud nuts. Free steering knuckle from ball
studs by installing Special Tool J-23742. Remove ball
stu d nuts and w ithdraw steering knuckle.
Installation
C A U T IO N :
A ll steering knuckle/steering arm a t­
tachments,
including anchor pin, are
attaching part in th at it could affect the perform ­
ance of vital components and systems, and/or could
result in major repair expense. I t must be replaced
w ith one o f the same part number or w ith an
equivalent part if replacement becomes necessary.
Do not use a replacement part o f lesser quality or
substitute design. Torque values must be used as
specified during reassembly to assure proper re­
tention of this part.
1. Place steering knuckle in position and insert upper and
low er ball studs into knuckle bosses.
C A U T IO N : Steering knuckle hole, ball stud and
n ut should
be
free
of
d irt
tightening nut.
2.
Install ball stud nuts and tighten n u t to specifications.
(See Specification S ection.)
N O T E : I f necessary, tighten one more notch to
insert cotter pins. Do not loosen nut to insert cotter
pin.
Refer
to
Ball
Joint
installation.
3.
Reverse above removal procedure, an d tighten splash
shield m ounting bolt. Tighten tw o caliper assembly
m ounting bolts to 35 ft. lb. torque.
4.
A djust w heel bearings as o u tlined under F ro n t Wheel
Bearing A djustm ent.
5.
Tighten w heel nuts to 75 ft. lb.
CROSSMEMBER AN D SUSPENSION U N IT
C om ponent parts o f the fro n t suspension may be serviced
im portant
and grease before
te x t fo r
proper
nut
separately as outlined in the preceding service operations.
However, if extensive service is to be perform ed to cross­
m em ber, fram e, etc., th e unit can be rem oved and installed as
follows:
Removal
1. Place vehicle o n hoist and remove the shock absorber
from th e low er control arm.
2.
Remove idler arm and pitm an arm .
3.
S upport engine and remove fro n t engine m o u n t center
bolts.
4.
Separate main brake feeder line from crossm em ber tee.
5.
Remove bolts retaining crossm em ber hangers to fram e
side rails.

Remove bolts securing crossm em ber to fram e b o tto m rail
and low er th e assem bly from vehicle.
Installation
C A U T IO N :
A ll crossmember to frame attachments

pense. They must be replaced w ith parts of the same
p a r t
n u m b e rs
o r
replacement becomes necessary. Do not use replace­
ment parts of lesser quality or substitute design.
Torque values must be used as specified during
reassembly to assure proper retention o f these parts.
1. Jack crossm em ber into position under frame and install
fram e b o tto m rail m ounting bolts.
2.
Install bolts securing crossm em ber hanger to fram e and
torqu e nuts. See specifications.
3.
Position engine on fro n t m oun t and install m ounting b olt
an d torque 45 lb. ft.
4.
Install the shock absorber.
5.
C onnect fro n t brake m ain feeder line and bleed brakes as
described in Section 5.

. Install idler arm and pitm an arm.
7.
Check and A djust fro n t end alignm ent as outlined under
" M aintenance and A djustm ents" in this section.
8
. Remove vehicle from hoist.
