4. L ocate th e index slot in the colum n jacket w ith the
protrusion on the clutch and brake pedal support (fig.
13).
5. Loosely install the colum n dash bracket and screws.

. Push the colum n dow n until the steering shaft flange
bo tto m s on the plastic spacers on the flexible coupling
and then torque the dash bracket screws.

Remove the plastic spacer from the alignm ent pins using a
wire h o o k (fig. 9). Check th e rag jo in t to steering shaft
f la n g e c l e a r a n c e ( . 2 5 0 " to .3 2 5 " ), if n o t w ithin
specifications, the dash bracket screws m ust be loosened
and the colum n raised or low ered as required. R etorque
the b racket screws.
C A U T IO N :
The alignment pin plastic spacers must
be removed before the vehicle can be driven.

. Push the toe pan seal to the toe pan, install and torque
the m ounting screws.
9. All Columns— C onnect the directional signal sw itch wiring
harness.
Autom atic Columns— C onnect the co nductor tube (for
transm ission indicator) to the instrum ent panel.
10. Install the steering wheel as outlined under " Steering
W heel— Installation."

. C onnect the transm ission linkage.
12. C onnect the battery ground cable.
T IL T COLUMN
The upper bearings on the tilt colum n are spun into the
bearing housing assem bly. I f th e bearings indicate need of
replacem ent, the entire bearing housing m ust be replaced. See
" T ilt Steering C olum n—Bearing Housing Assembly Removal
(Colum n in Vehicle)" for the correct replacem ent procedure.
Tilt Columns Lower Bearing
Removal
1. P ry o ff the low er bearing rein fo rcem ent clip and remove
th e clip and reinforcem ent.
2.
Rem ove th e low er bearing and ad ap ter as an assembly.
Press the bearing o u t o f th e adapter.
Installation
1. Press th e new bearing in to the adapter and install the
low er bearing and adapter o nto th e lower end o f the
steering shaft and place in position in the low er end o f
th e colum n, aligning the w ide tab o f the adapter w ith the
open slot in th e colum n.
2.
Place th e low er bearing rein fo rcem en t over the end o f the
colum n (open position o f reinforcem ent to open slot in
colum n) and install the reinforcem ent clip. Make sure all
th ree tabs o f the clip are fully engaged w ith the slots in
the reinforcem ent and colum n.
T ilt Column Bearing Housing Assembly
Removal (Column in V eh icle)—Fig. 14
1.
D isconnect th e b a tte ry ground cable.
2.
Remove th e steering w heel as outlined o n Page 9-4.
3.
Remove th e directional signal switch.
4.
Colum n S hift Models — Using a suitable size p u nch, drive
o u t th e shift lever pivot pin and remove the shift lever.
5.
Install the tilt release lever and place th e colum n in the
fuE " u p " position. Remove the tilt lever spring and
retainer using a screwdriver th a t ju st fits into the slot
opening. Insert the screwdriver in to the slot, push in
approxim ately 3 /1 6 " , ro tate clockwise approxim ately

tu rn u n til the retainer ears align w ith the grooves in
the housing and remove the retainer and spring.

. Remove th e steering shaft bearing lo ck nut using socket
J-22599. Rem ove th e upper bearing race seat and race.
7.
Remove th e tw o bearing housing pivot pins using Tool
J-21854.

. Pull up o n the tilt release lever (to disengage the lock
shoes) and rem ove th e bearing housing.
I f the bearing housing is being replaced or it is necessary to
disassemble the bearing housing, proceed as follows:
a.
Press th e upper and low er bearings o u t o f the
housing.
b.
Using Puller J-5822 and Slide Hammer J-2619, pull
the bearing races from the housing.
c.
Remove the tilt release lever.
d.
Drive o u t th e shoe release pivot pin using Tool
J-22635 or a suitable punch. Remove the lever
spring and remove th e wedge.
e.
Using a suitable size punch, drive o u t th e lock shoe
retaining pin. Remove th e shoes and shoe springs.
If the u pper steering shaft, low er steering shaft, o r centering
spheres are being rem oved, proceed as follows:

Remove th e steering shaft assembly through th e upper
en d o f the colum n. I f it is necessary to disassemble the
shaft, proceed as follows:
a.
To remove th e low er steering shaft first disconnect
the shaft at th e p o t jo in t coupling clamp.
b.
T urn th e upper shaft 90° to the low er shaft and
slide the upper shaft and centering spheres from th e
low er shaft.
c.
R o tate the centering spheres 90° and remove the
centering spheres and preload spring from th e upper
shaft.
I f th e bearing housing supp ort is being replaced, proceed as
follows:

Remove th e four bearing housing support screws and
remove the support.
Assembly
1.
Assemble th e steering shaft as follows:
a.
L ubricate and assemble the centering spheres and
preload spring.
b.
Install the spheres in to the upper (short) shaft and
ro tate 90°.
c.
Install the low er shaft 90° to the upper shaft and
over th e centering spheres. Slowly straighten the
shafts while com pressing the preload spring.
