PERIODIC M AINTENANCE
The distributor breaker points and spark plugs are the only
ignition system com ponents th a t require periodic service. The
rem ainder o f the ignition system requires only periodic inspec
tion to check operation o f th e units, tightness o f th e electrical
connections, and condition o f th e wiring. When checking the
coil, test w ith a reputable tester.
The distributors are equipped w ith a cam lubricator, which
should be ro tated 180° every
2 4,000 miles. Do n o t a ttem p t to lubricate the elem ent, b u t
replace w hen necessary.
D istributor shaft lubrication is accom plished by a reservoir
o f lube around the m ainshaft in the distributor body.
DISTRIBUTOR CONTACT POINTS
Cleaning
D irty contact points should be dressed with a few strokes
o f a clean, fine-cut contact file. The file should not be used for
other m etals and should n ot be allowed to becom e greasy or
dirty.
Never use emery cloth to clean contact points.
surfaces, after considerable use, m ay n o t appear bright and
sm ooth, b u t this is n o t necessarily an indication th at th ey are
n o t functioning satisfactorily. Do n o t attem pt to remove all
roughness nor dress the p o in t surfaces dow n sm ooth; merely
remove scale or dirt.
Badly b urned or p itted contact points should be replaced
and th e cause o f trouble determ ined so it can be elim inated.
High resistance or loose connections in th e condenser circuit,
oil or foreign materials on the con tact surfaces, im proper point
adjustm ent or high voltages m ay cause oxidized contact
points. Check for these conditions where burned contacts are
experienced. An out-of-balance condition in the ignition
system , o ften the result o f too m uch or to o little condenser
capacity, is indicated where point pitting is encountered.
