Oil Seal (Rear Main)
Replacement
N O T E :
Always replace the upper and lower seal as
a u nit. Install seal w ith lip facing fro n t o f engine.
The rear m ain bearing oil seal can be replaced (b o th halves)
w ith o u t removal o f th e crankshaft. E xtrem e care should be
exercised when installing this seal to p ro tec t the sealing bead
located in the channel on th e outside diam eter o f th e seal. An
installation to o l (Fig. 11V), can be used to p rotect the seal
bead w hen positioning upper h alf o f seal betw een crankshaft
and block as follows.
1. W ith the oil pan and oil pum p rem oved, remove th e rear
m ain bearing cap.
2.
Rem ove oil seal from th e bearing cap by prying from the
b o tto m w ith a small screwdriver (Fig. 12V).

To remove th e upper h alf o f th e seal, use a small ham m er
to tap a brass pin p u nch on one end o f seal u n til it
protrudes far enough to be rem oved w ith pliers (Fig.
13 V).
4.
Clean all sealant and foreign m aterial from cylinder case
bearing cap and crankshaft, using a nonabrasive cleaner.
5.
Inspect com ponents for nicks, scratches, burrs and
m achining defects at all sealing surfaces, case assembly
and crankshaft.

. Coat seal lips an d seal bead w ith light engine oil — keep
oil off seal m ating ends.

Position tip o f to o l betw een crankshaft and seal seat in
cylinder case.

. Position seal betw een crankshaft an d tip o f to o l so th a t
seal bead contacts tip o f tool.
N O T E :
Make sure th at oil-seal lip is positioned
toward fro n t o f engine.
