Measuring Lobe Lift

N O T E :
Procedure is similar to that used fo r check
ing valve tim ing. If improper valve operation is
indicated, measure the lift of each push rod in
consecutive order and record the readings.
1. Remove valve m echanism as outlined.
2.
Position indicator w ith ball socket adapter (T ool J-8520)
on push rod (Fig. 18L).
3.
R o tate th e crankshaft slowly in th e direction o f rotatio n
until the lifter is on the heel o f th e cam lobe. A t this
point, the push rod will be in its low est position.
4.
Set dial indicator on zero, then ro tate the crankshaft
slowly, or attach an auxiliary starter switch and "b u m p "
the engine over, un til the push rod is in the fully raised
position.
C A U T IO N :
The distributor primary lead must be
disconnected from the negative post on the coil.
5.
Com pare the to tal lift recorded from the dial indicator
w ith specifications.
6
. C ontinue to rotate the crankshaft until the indicator
reads zero. This will be a check on the accuracy o f the
original indicator reading.
