KEYS A N D LOCKS
Two keys are provided w ith each vehicle. The keys operate
the ignition sw itch and door locks.

EMERGENCY STARTING

• Never tow the vehicle to start because the surge forw ard
w hen the engine starts could cause a collision w ith the
tow vehicle.
• Engines in vehicles w ith autom atic transm issions can n o t
be started by pushing the vehicle.
• T o start the vehicle w hen the Energizer (b attery ) is
discharged, use a single auxiliary b attery or Energizer o f
the
same nominal voltage
suitable ju m per cables.
• Make connections as set fo rth below under " Jum p
S tarting With A uxiliary (B ooster) B attery " to lessen the
chance o f personal injury or pro p erty damage.
C A U T IO N :
Never expose battery to open flam e or
electric spark—battery action generates hydrogen
gas which is flam m able and explosive. D o n 't allow
battery
fluid
to
contact skin, eyes, fabrics, or
painted surfaces—fluid
which
could
cause
property damage. Wear eye protection when w o rk
ing w ith battery.

Jump Starting With Auxiliary

(Booster) Battery
Both booster and discharged b attery should be treated
carefully w hen using jum per cables. Following
procedure outlined below , being careful n o t to cause sparks:

2.
Remove vent caps from b o th the b o o ster and the
discharged batteries. Lay a clo th over the open vent wells
o f each b attery . These tw o actions help reduce the
explosion hazard always present in either b attery when
connecting "live" booster batteries to " dead" batteries.
3.

cloths m ay have corrosive acid on them .

personal injury or property damage due to battery
explosion, (3) damage to the charging system of the
the
booster vehicle or o f the im m obilized vehicle.
Do not attem p t to jum p start a vehicle having a
frozen battery because the battery may rupture or
explode. If a frozen battery is suspected, examine
all fill vents on the battery. If ice can be seen, or if
the electrolyte fluid cannot be seen, do n o t attem pt
to start w ith jum per cables as long as the battery
remains frozen.

PUSH STARTING

If y o u r vehicle is equipped w ith a m anual transm ission, it
can be started in an em ergency by pushing. When being pushed
to start the engine, tu rn o ff all unnecessary electrical loads,
tu rn ignition to " ON," depress the clutch pedal an d place the
shift lever in high gear. Release the clu tch pedal w hen speed
reaches 10 to 15 miles per hour. Bum pers and other parts
co n tacted b y the pushing vehicle should be p ro tected from
damage during pushing. Never tow th e vehicle to start.

TOWING

N orm ally y o u r vehicle m ay be tow ed w ith all four wheels
on th e ground for distances up to 50 miles at speeds o f less
th an 35 MPH. The engine should be o ff and the transm ission
in neutral.
H owever, the rear wheels m ust be raised o ff th e ground or
