COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIRS
STEERING WHEEL
Removal
1. D isconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove horn b u tto n , receiving cup, belleville spring and
bushing and m ark steering wheel to steering shaft rela­
tionship.
3. Remove steering shaft nut and washer.
4. Use Tool J-2927 to remove wheel (fig. 7). It m ay be
necessary to tap lightly on the bolt head o f the tool w ith
a ham m er as it is turned dow n, to loosen tight steering
wheels.
Installation
C A U T IO N : Directional signal control assembly must
be in neutral position when assembling steering wheel
to prevent damage to cancelling cam and control
assembly.
1. W ith fro n t wheels in the straight ahead position place
steering wheel on steering shaft and align.
2. T ap wheel gently in to place and secure w ith washer and
n u t.
C A U T IO N : The steering wheel to steering shaft
fastener is an im portant attaching part in that it could
a f f e c t the performance o f vital components and
systems, and/or could result in major repair expense.
It must be replaced w ith one o f the same part number
or w ith an equivalent part if replacement becomes
necessary. Do not use a replacement part o f lesser
quality or substitute design. Torque values must be
used as specified during reassembly to assure proper
retention of this part.
3. Install belleville spring, receiving cup, bushings an d a t­
taching screws.
4. Install horn b u tto n assembly.
5. C onnect b attery ground cable.

STEERING COLUMN UPPER BEARING
Removal
1. Remove steering w heel as outlined in this section.
2. Remove directional signal cancelling cam.
3. Pry o ut upper bearing.
Installation
1. Replace all com ponent parts in reverse order o f removal
making sure that directional signal sw itch is in neutral
position before installing steering wheel.
C A U T IO N :
The steering wheel to steering shaft
fastener is an im portant attaching part in that it could
a f f e c t the performance o f vital components and
systems, and/or could result in major repair expense.
I t must be replaced w ith one of the same part number
or w ith an equivalent part if replacement becomes
necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser
quality or substitute design. Torque values must be
used as specified during reassembly to assure proper
retention of this part.
