TURBO HYDRA-MATIC 350 DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE
A ccurate diagnosis o f transm ission problem s begins w ith a
thorough understanding o f norm al transm ission operation. !n
particular, know ing w hich units are involved in the various
speeds or shifts so th at the specific units or circuits involved in
the problem can be isolated and investigated furth er. A na
lytical diagnosis will p ro tect the technician from come backs
and certainly will improve ow ner satisfaction.
An im portant and often overlooked aspect o f diagnosis is
finding out specific custom er com plaints. For this purpose a
short ride w ith the custom er will often prove beneficial. It
may be found that the condition the custom er w ants corrected
is standard and should n ot be altered.
The following sequence, based on field experience, provides
the desired inform ation quickly and in m ost cases actually
corrects the m alfunction w ithou t requiring the removal o f the
transm ission. Details o f the items listed in this sequence are
covered further in the tex t.

O IL LEVEL AND C O NDITIO N CHECK
Always check the oil level before road testing. Oil m ust be
visible on dip stick prior to operating the vehicle. Erratic
shifting, pum p noise, or other m alfunctions can in some cases
be traced to im proper oil level.
Oil level should be checked w ith the selector lever in the
Park (P) position, engine running, and the vehicle on level
pavem ent.
Fluid level should be to the FULL m ark w ith the trans
mission at norm al operating tem perature (1 7 0 "-190°F.). With
warm fluid (room tem p eratu re), the level should be at or
slightly below the ADD m ark.
If oil level was low , refer to Oil Leaks.
The condition o f th e oil is often an indication o f w hether
the transm ission should be removed from the vehicle, or to
make further tests. When checking oil level, a burned smell and
discoloration indicate burned clutches or band and the trans
mission will have to be removed.
M ANUAL LINKAGE
M anual linkage adjustm ent and the associated neutral start
sw itch are im p ortan t from a safety standpoint. The neutral
start sw itch should be adjusted so th a t the engine will start in
th e Park and N eutral positions only.
