11. Remove the shift tube retaining ring w ith a screw driver
(fig. 20). Remove th e th ru st washer.
12. Remove the neutral-safety o r back-up lam p sw itch screws
and remove the sw itch.

removing / " from the pilot end o f the tool (fig.
This allows the shift tub e to be pushed fu rth er o u t o f the
housing and will n o t affect the use o f the to o l on
passenger car colum ns.
14. Remove th e shift tu b e assem bly using T ool J-22551 (fig.
22). Insert the hooked end o f th e tool in to th e n o tch in
the shift tu b e ju st below th e shift lever housing key. Pilot
the sleeve over the threaded end o f the tool and in to th e
upper end o f the shift tu be. Force the shift tube o ut o f
the housing b y turning the n u t o nto the tool. If the shift
tube is n o t com pletely free when th e n u t is b o tto m ed on
the threads, com plete the removal by hand.

Remove the lock plate by sliding out o f th e column
notches, tipping th e plate dow nw ard tow ard the housing
(to com press the wave washer) and th en removing as
show n in Figure 23. Remove the wave washer.
Remove th e shift lever housing.

Column Shift Models - Remove th e shift lever spring by
winding th e spring up w ith pliers.
If necessary, remove the dash panel seal, m ounting plate

and the in stru m en t panel seal from the colum n jacket.
