The engine tune-up is im p ortan t to the m odern autom otive
engine w ith its vastly im proved pow er and perform ance.
Emission system requirem ents, interrelated system functions,
im proved electrical system s and oth er advances in design,
make tod ay 's engines m ore sensitive and have a decided effect
on pow er, perform ance and fuel consum ption.
It is seldom advisable to attem p t a tu ne up by correction o f
one or tw o item s only. Tim e will norm ally be saved and more
lasting results assured if the technician will follow a definite
and thorough procedure o f analysis and correction o f all item s
affecting pow er, perform ance and econom y.
The tune-up will be perform ed in tw o parts. The first p art
will consist o f m echanical checks and adjustm ents; th e second
p art will consist o f an instru m en t checkout th a t can be
perform ed w ith any one o f the u nits o f service equipm ent

Remove any foreign m atter from around spark plugs by
blow ing out w ith com pressed air, th en disconnect wires an d
